North Helpline believes all deserve adequate food, housing, and respect. We assist our neighbors in obtaining basic needs that affirm their human dignity and worth. We work to make sure that all have food on the table and a roof over their heads by distributing food, assisting with prevention of utility shut off and eviction prevention, and access to basic medical care.

North Helpline was founded in 1989 by a group of volunteers who noticed many of their neighbors were not able to pay rent, cover utility bills and put food on the table. These neighbors began collecting food and financial support to distribute to those most in need in their community. The initial group grew to 600+ volunteers who now contribute nearly 3,000 hours of work monthly. North Helpline provides critical human services to over 1,500 clients each week in an effort to reduce the impact of hunger and poverty in greater north Seattle.

Currently, North Helpline is seeking a part time Food Bank Lead. This position oversees receiving, sorting, storing, and distributing all food products in our small food bank warehouse. This position primarily works with the Food Bank Director and Food Bank Manager to provide three weekly distributions at our Lake City food bank. This position will work directly with our neighbors to provide access to nutritious food. This role will direct volunteers to ensure operations run efficiently.

Skill Requirements:

  • Able to work independently in a chaotic warehouse environment
  • Logistical and spatial management
  • Ability to lift and move objects, such as food crates, weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to train and assign tasks to volunteers as well as helping create and maintain a positive atmosphere for them to work in
  • Ability to professionally interact with clients, contributors, government employees, elected officials, and other personnel in a culturally diverse environment

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to North Helpline Operating Policy, Procedures, and Protocols.
  • Oversees volunteers during the intake, sorting, storing and distribution of all food products
  • Keeps an organized and sanitary warehouse; consistently follows and executes a “first in, first out” (FIFO) inventory (stock rotation) and adheres to food safety protocols and COVID sanitization procedures
  • Oversees and two weekly food distributions (Thursday evening and Saturday morning)
  • Determines what food categories are available for each distribution, bearing in mind supply and striving to maintain a healthy and balanced nutritional palette
  • Assists in assigning appropriate roles to volunteers, as well as communicating expectations and protocols for food distribution
  • Answers any volunteer or client questions or complaints (or direct to other staff)
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator/Manager to ensure that there are enough volunteers

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Washington Driver’s license, with no outstanding violations.
  • Able to drive a full-size van [automatic transmission].
  • Current King County Food Handler's Permit (can obtain immediately upon starting)
  • Able to occasionally work flexible hours

20 hours/week from Thursday to Saturday
