Finance Manager

Summary

SumOfUs is looking for a Finance Manager to help ensure we have a strong foundation to win campaigns against corporations behaving badly. If you love fighting for change, if you are excited about global economic justice, and if you love spreadsheets, numbers, and keeping teams running smoothly, then this might be the role for you.

This role will primarily focus on managing finances at SumOfUs, and has a key role in accounts payable and budget reporting. This person will also help craft and implement systems to make our growing organization operate more smoothly and efficiently. This role requires excellent project management skills and attention to detail, experience with nonprofit finance with a global team, and a grounding in anti-oppression principles.

This position is full-time, remote and can be undertaken by anyone between GMT -5 (East Coast Americas) and GMT +1 (Central European Time, West Africa Time). We do have a preference for candidates in the United States near a Bank of America branch location, but will certainly consider qualified candidates in other locations.

What you’ll do as part of our team

Accounts Payable/receivable

• Responsible for overseeing and managing the bi-monthly accounts payable process, including:
• Reviewing invoices and expense reimbursements, and sometimes entering payment information into Quickbooks and relevant payment systems
• Making vendor and staff payments 
• Communication with staff and vendors to troubleshoot, as needed

Monthly Close

• Responsible for overseeing monthly close process, including:
• Communication with our bookkeeper
• Saving and sharing all monthly bank statements
• Coding staff credit card expenses
• Responding to and following-up on open items 
• Completing monthly cash flow statement in Excel once books are closed 

Financial reporting

• Coordinate with Senior Manager of Operations and Finance and others to prepare monthly finance reports and updates for the Board of Directors, internal management staff, and other audiences
• As needed by the Development team, creating grant budgets and financial reports for funders

General financial management

• Manage and monitor cash flow
• Manage relationships with banks
• Process payroll, working with payroll vendors with staff in 10+ countries
• Identify appropriate payment processor or avenues to send payments to different countries based on needs of recipient (i.e. ACH vs Western Union vs PayPal)

Audit

• Work with Finance & Operations team to close annual financial books
• Help audit lead and manage audit tasks as needed to close annual audit

Other Responsibilities

• Check-in weekly with staff on tasks including:
• Monitoring our online mailboxes 
• One-off finance and operations projects
• Managing check deposits - depositing and sending thank yous
• Manage bookkeepers and other contracted finance support 
• Ensure that SoU staff are appropriately recording their time, using SOU credit cards, and submitting reimbursements; train new staff on timekeeping, expenditure, and reimbursement procedures; submit monthly timekeeping information to bookkeepers for allocation
• Train existing and new staff on financial processes as needed
• Other tasks as assigned

Skills and experiences you’ll need to bring:

We have no formal education requirements – if you can meet the responsibilities of the role and are willing to grow, that’s all that matters.

And, this role in particular will require you to:

• Have 3 or more years of experience in nonprofit finance using GAAP standards; 
• Have experience in an international work environment across multiple countries and currencies;
• Have excellent organizational skills, be able to track multiple moving pieces of work; 
• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
• Strong competence with QuickBooks, Google Drive, and Excel (or similar programs that would allow you to quickly learn the systems SOU uses);
• Experience doing accounts payable;
• Experience with c3/c4 nonprofit audits in the US;
• Be able to handle sensitive information with integrity and maintain confidentiality of information;
• Have a strong equity lens, understand oppression, and bring anti-oppression principles into all aspects of work;
• Be comfortable with technology, learning and figuring out new systems, then providing support to team members;
• Be willing to learn and approach challenges with curiosity and from a solutions based mindset; and
• Excellent time management skills, and the ability to navigate working across multiple time zones.

Big pluses

We know that no one can possibly have all these skills and experiences - you will likely be able to bring 2 or 3 of the following to our team:

• Project management experience;
• Experience drafting budgets for grants, tracking spending, and producing grant reports; 
• Experience working remotely;
• Located near a Bank of America branch location; and
• Experience working with a nonprofit organization with employees in several countries.

Compensation is competitive and will be determined based on a combination of experience, seniority, and where you live. For some context: this position in the US would pay between $70,400 - $88,000 USD per year depending on experience and seniority. In other regions, compensation will be adjusted for local currency and local market rates. SumOfUs's compensation policy is calculated with a focus on equity and where staff can thrive in their local context.

SumOfUs is a fully remote and distributed team, as such we offer stipends to offset cell phone and internet costs. We offer stipends to set-up home offices or to rent space in a coworking environment. We offer five weeks paid vacation (plus additional sick leave and all major public holidays off and 6 months paid parental leave, contributions to retirement, and the ability to work from home and work with a degree of flexibility outside our core hours of operation. We cover private health insurance premiums for employees and dependents who live in countries without public insurance.
