Founded in 1972 in Berkeley, California, the Center for Independent Living (The CIL) emerged from the Independent Living movement of the 1960s as a powerful force in helping people with disabilities achieve their independence. TheCIL is the model for hundreds of Independent Living Centers throughout the U.S. and the world.

Position Summary

This position supports CIL’s award process, prepares persuasive and articulate proposals and supporting documentation for individuals, foundations, government entities, and corporations to solicit awards in support of CIL's mission and priorities. Specifically, responsible for collaborating with CIL’s management team to understand programs and priorities; performing and utilizing research to gather and format information, and developing proposals targeted at successfully raising funds for programs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform proactive research on funding prospects; identify opportunities for potential prospects and proposal opportunities, and work with CIL’s management team to identify potential assignments and fit
  • Write, edit, and proofread grant proposals, grant applications, gift opportunity descriptions, and other materials for varied audiences to solicit funds in support of CIL's mission, goals, and priorities
  • Develop content knowledge on a range of CIL programs and priorities, and serve as a resource in those areas
  • Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval
  • Support marketing efforts with key communications, both internal and external
  • Additional responsibilities as required

Education and/or Experience

  • BA degree and/or three (3) years of experience in an independent living or other advocacy-related organization and writing experience

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to write and monitor grant proposal process
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage time and multiple tasks effectively
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Word, Excel, email, and the Internet
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Personal experience with a disability
