Description

The VIP Community Mental Health Center (VIP CMHC) is an exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works under the umbrella of the greater Violence Intervention Program (VIP).

VIP CMHC offers mental health services for children, 0 to 21 years old, and their non-offending family members living in LA County. VIP CMHC provides treatment using a multidisciplinary treatment team. VIP CMHC also integrates medical and mental health assessments to provide comprehensive treatment to the child. VIP CMHC clinical staff provides services on-site and in schools as well as at the VIP's Forensic Medical Clinic as children are triaged after trauma.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development and Communications will report to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer. This position is responsible for creating and implementing the organization’s communication, development and fundraising strategies to meet its contribution income goals. She/he leads the staff and Board in stewardship of current donors, funders and partners, and identifies, cultivates and solicits prospective individual, foundation and corporate donors as well as government grant funding.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Marketing & Communications

-Develop a cohesive annual marketing and communications strategy which highlights VIP’s programs to county and community stakeholders; this will include newsletters, management of website and social media accounts, as well as printed materials highlighting the agency and the various therapeutic programs offered to clients.

-Network with agency stakeholders and partners to promote VIP services including Mental Health services and Children’s Medical Village services (i.e. HUB, Children’s Welcome Center, and Youth Welcome Center). 

 

Fund Development & Grant Management

-Schedule, write, submit, track and report on foundation grant proposals in accordance with established foundation guidelines.

-Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy, utilizing major gifts, planned to give, events and direct mail solicitations in concert with the Executive Director/CEO.

-Research and develop new sources of government, foundation, corporate and individual funds.

-Write creative and compelling copy for individual donor proposals, case statements, brochures, invitations and other correspondence. Ensure written materials (including proposal budgets) are accurate, articulate, well-targeted, and well-reasoned. Ensure that donor materials are high quality, cost effective, well designed, and appropriate for their audience.

-Monitor and manage donor relations.

-Demonstrate perseverance and positive attitude while conveying sensitivity to the needs of the donor.

-Support the Board of Directors and H.E.A.R.T. Board in identifying and soliciting gift prospects and develop the Board’s fundraising capacity.

-Assist in organizing and planning special events for H.E.A.R.T

-Identify and recommend for recruitment for new Board members.

 

Management

-Manage and mentor support staff to help their professional development and effectiveness within the department as a whole.

-Responsible for achieving revenue goals.

-Work with the Chief Financial Officer to maintain accurate financial records.

-Maintain and track individual giving revenue and expense budget throughout the year.

-Supervise the Development Associate

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

-Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience

-3+ years of significant giving, grant writing, campaign management and event planning; preferably within a nonprofit organization.

-PC proficiency with MS Office Suite required. Work with fundraising database software required, Raiser’s Edge preferred.

 

DESIRED SKILLS

-Preferred: Experience with The Raiser’s Edge software

-Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage donors in-person and in writing through articulate, compelling, and well-reasoned proposals.

-Must have demonstrated success in private foundation grant writing and government grant writing.

-Must be energetic, creative, resourceful and take proactive initiative in seeking increased contributions.

-Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

-Strong analytical and budgeting skills.

-Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and mentoring skills, including the ability to work well with Board of Directors, Executives, Staff and Volunteers. 

-Must be an effective and cooperative team player.
