Fund Development and Communications Manager

Mandela MarketPlace is a nonprofit community development corporation based on Oakland, CA and incorporated in 2004. Our mission is to partner with local residents, family farmers and community-based businesses to improve health, create wealth and build assets through cooperative food enterprises in urban and rural communities.  

Mandela MarketPlace addresses food insecurity, economic disinvestment and health inequity in under-resourced communities. Through community organizing, education, entrepreneurship and ladder up financing, Mandela MarketPlace invests in community members and organizations to cultivate a thriving local economy.

This position with Mandela Marketplace will provide three primary and critical functions for the organization:

1. Solicit and develop new revenue streams through

a. Government contract and grant source generation

b. Foundation and private revenue generation

c. Individual donor revenue generation

2. Develop, cultivate, maintain and enhance relationships with financial supporters, donors, public and private funders

3. Develop and manage MMP’s communication, including social and news media

This position, under direction of the Executive Director and Board of Directors, will:

Solicit and develop new revenue streams for MMP by:

• Cataloging and mapping current resource streams within MMP

• Identifying revenue source theme, areas of consistency and areas of potential funding focus, including donor landscapes, trends and practices

• Prioritizing with timeline, specific streams of revenue enhancement for targeted application

• Developing and writing proposals to prioritized public funding sources

• Developing and executing strategies for approaching private foundations, endowments and corporations

• Developing and executing strategies for individual donor funders

Maintain, promote and enhance fiduciary relationships by:

• Cataloging current funding relationships, including but not limited to, duration of relationships, nature and extent of relationships and constraints/requirements of the relationships

• Developing, prioritizing and executing strategies to enhance current funding relationships 

• Provide regular updates of strategic funding progress to Executive Director

Required Experience and Qualifications 

• 3-5 years fund development and grant-writing experience, including successful federal and major foundation grant applications

• Excellent writing skills and ability to develop compelling stories

• Commitment to working with and in low-income communities of color

• Ability to interact comfortably with broad range of people and backgrounds 

• Familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement techniques

• Time management skills, work planning, and attention to detail

• Flexible and team-oriented approach to problem-solving 

• Willingness to travel, within California and nationally

• Interest in growing with a young, dynamic organization

• Bilingual a plus

• CFRE certified preferred
