POSITION SUMMARY

Climate Policy Initiative is seeking a Director of Operations to become an integral member of the Climate Finance Leadership Team. The primary goal of the Director of Operations is to oversee business practices of Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) with a particular focus on the Climate Finance program. CPI is a high-impact non-profit organization headquartered in the US with offices around the world. CPI works with governments, development banks, and investors around the world to solve the most pressing sustainable development challenges, helping nations grow while addressing climate risk.


The Director of Operations will be a key member of the Climate Finance Leadership (CFL) team, reporting to the Executive Director, Climate Finance (ED). The Director of Operations will maintain control of diverse business operations and is an experienced and efficient leader with excellent interpersonal skills, business acumen, and exemplary work ethic.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the operations workstream within the Climate Finance program, streamlining team-wide tools and systems infrastructure, forecasting and reporting, workforce and project capacity planning, implementing new technologies and processes, and other operational functions to optimize CPI’s overall performance and effectiveness
  • Drive organizational development across offices, including monitoring the results of program wide, and office-specific business plans
  • Build efficient and effective team structures across offices, assisting country directors to manage staff allocation ensuring balanced work flows and utilization of resources
  • Identify staffing requirements necessary to manage growth and maintain financial sustainability including hiring and staff training and development needs in collaboration with Associate Directors and Managers.  
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance to drive improvements in the financial management of the Climate Finance program, collaborating with the Director of Finance and regional Directors to forecast revenue expectations, set goals, and track Climate Finance workstream and global financial performance
  • Develop and implement strategies to drive operational efficiency across the Climate Finance program to increase productivity and minimize overhead expenditure
  • Establish and communicate policies that promote company culture and vision
  • Lead Operations team and guide their professional development
  • Support Executive Team in ensuring the legal compliance of CPI’s operational policies
  • Initiate and implement special projects as needed


QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 12 years of progressive, professional experience in an international setting
  • 5 years in an executive leadership role managing multidisciplinary teams across several locations
  • MBA or advanced degree in a similar field


VALUED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • A deep commitment to the mission and values of CPI
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities
  • Experience in management consulting, a major international nonprofit organization, technology company, or related field highly desirable
  • Expertise in key aspects of business operations as described in the role above
  • Familiarity with software that includes CRM, project management, financial and operational reporting (e.g. Intacct, MS Project, Salesforce product suite, Slack etc.) 
  • Experience managing the roll-out and implementation of new tools and processes across a global team
  • Expertise in strategic planning and business development
  • Strong track record in effectively prioritizing and managing multiple and sometimes competing tasks in tight timelines
  • Experience in fundraising is highly desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal & presentation skills


LOCATION AND COMPENSATION

The position is open for immediate hire at 80% FTE with a view to going full-time at a later date if deemed appropriate. The position will be located in San Francisco but will require international travel. CPI offers an excellent and competitive compensation and benefits package. Compensation will be based on experience.
