Oakland Promise is working to ensure that every Oakland child will graduate from high school with the expectation, skills, and resources to complete college and be successful in the career of their choice. The Oakland Promise includes four programs: Brilliant Baby, Kindergarten to College (K2C), College Access, and College Completion, that provide a cradle to career continuum of college-focused supports for students. Our program strategies touch the lives of children and families in early childhood (ages 0-5), elementary, middle and high school; and culminate in multi-year scholarships and support for students in college. Our goal is to dramatically increase the number of college graduates from Oakland and ensure that all students, regardless of background, hold a college-bound identity.

Position: 

Oakland Promise, an Oakland-based non-profit organization, is seeking an outstanding and exceptional Senior Finance Manager. This finance team member is charged with the responsibility for fiscal and budgetary functions of the organization. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Financial & Operations Officer, the Senior Finance Manager will be responsible for the administration of the financials, budget, and accounting system of the Oakland Promise. The Senior Finance Manager will work alongside the Finance Manager and manage staff within the Finance Team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

A successful Senior Finance Manager will have the ability to:

Reporting and Forecasting 

● Provide analytical, forecasting, reporting, and project support to senior management

● Produce monthly reports, which include key metrics, financial results, and variance reporting 

● Work with Accounting on the monthly financial close process. 

● Spearhead the budgeting and forecasting processes for the organization and properties

● Identify opportunities for performance improvement across the organization 

● Work alongside cross-functional partners in Accounting, Programs and Operations to ensure plans are properly executed. 

● Develop models that help with decision-making 

● Produce cash flow projections and monitor results for the organization

Financial Management: 

● Execute all aspects of financial management as needed in NetSuite 

● Oversee the systems integration of NetSuite and Salesforce 

● Manage internal/external systems and controls for accounts payable and accounts receivable to ensure safe deposit and recording of incoming monies, timely payment of accounts, and internal cash-flow 

● Monitor and forecast the immediate and longer-term cash needs of the organization 

● Work cooperatively with the organization’s external independent auditor and organize the annual review of the independent audit with management, board subcommittees and governing board 

● Coordinate and manage audit processes with internal staff, outside funders, consultants, and auditors 

● Ensure proper preparation for timely IRS filing(s)

Strategic Planning and Leadership:

● Manage and coordinate the annual development of the organizational budget using a proactive, collaborative and strategic decision-making process that strengthens OP as a sustainable and thriving organization 

● Mentor program managers on budget management including cost monitoring, forecasting and budget creation for their programs 

● Ensure strong internal communications between HR, Finance & Operations, and other program teams within OP, leveraging technology and tools to be efficient and effective

● Deliver accurate and timely financial information to the Development Team for government and foundation grant proposals and reports 

● Other duties as required

Qualifications 

The successful candidate will have: 

● Any combination of training/education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's/graduate degree from an accredited college/university with an emphasis in finance, or related field

● 3-7 years of successful experience in non-profit business management, comparable private sector experience, or related organization operations 

● Exemplary communication skills and demonstrated ability to write and present orally clear and concise management, finance, and related reports 

● Successfully overseen audits for small to mid-size organization 

● Demonstrated experience in developing and executing strategic plans 

● Experience setting up accounting systems, including performance management structures 

● Strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with people both inside and outside of the organization 

● Commitment to supporting a diverse, inclusive, transparent, and equity-centered organization 

● Experience managing a budget of at least $5 million 

● Preferably, experience in managing larger, multi-million dollar endowments
