Responsibilities

The Deputy Director of Development, in tandem with the Director of Development, will help drive Legal Aid’s development strategy, leading, or supporting, a selection of initiatives based on their interests and experience.

Fundraising:

• Manage the Servant of Justice Awards Dinner, held annually in April, which raises over $1.7 million from law firm and corporate sponsors, and honors individuals who have made meaningful contributions to access to justice.

• Continue to grow the Making Justice Real Campaign, Legal Aid’s annual law firm peer-to-peer fundraiser, which raises over $3.1 million annually, primarily from individual attorneys at DC’s largest law firms.

• Develop Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs, two areas that hold enormous potential for Legal Aid but which have not been a primary focus thus far.

• Manage donor communications, including social media, annual report, a periodic newsletter designed primarily to support donor cultivation, and digital marketing communities, including partnering with a digital advertising company on search engine and social media ads with a focus on donor acquisition.

Grants Management:

• Manage Legal Aid’s government and private grants program totaling over $4 million per year, working with Legal Aid’s Grants & Special Projects Manager and legal program staff.

Board Management and Support:

• Manage Legal Aid’s 51-member Board of Trustees, whose primary focus is supporting our fundraising initiatives. Particular challenges include engaging Board members in a world of hybrid and virtual meetings, and ensuring that they feel connected both to the organization and to each other.

The Deputy Director of Development would lead some of these initiatives and support the work of the Director of Development, Grants & Special Projects Manager, and Development Associate on others. There would also be opportunities to work with

exceptional candidates to shape the position further, based on their interests and experience.

Qualifications

• At least five years of relevant experience in development and fundraising, public interest law, or both. Candidates without development experience should detail in their cover letter how their public interest law or other experience would be applicable to this position.

• Outstanding writing and oral communication skills.
