Position Summary

The SmartStart Teacher will provide support and information to students (1st-5thgrade) who need academic guidance to foster academic discipline and commitment to improve in homework production and in levels of general school subjects. Daily functions include lesson planning and oversight, assisting director and coordinator in after-school programming implantation, supervising students, and communicating with parents.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach 2 learning centers to two different groups of up to 17 students on a weekly basis.  Learning Centers should incorporate key concepts and understandings that mirror the California State Standards of grade-level curriculum but does so in a way that incorporates multiple intelligences, more opportunities to work with manipulatives, and utilizes real-world examples.
  • Plan and hold individualized tutoring sessions for students when they are performing below grade level.  Tutoring sessions should be planned in consideration of students’ progress academically and assessment.
  • Providing homework support to students in a contained classroom.
  • Help assess the needs of students: including strengths & weakness.
  • Communicate with parents and students’ teachers about student progress, student needs, and the SmartStart program.  
  • Work with SmartStart staff in the intake, selection, and assessment of prospective students.  
  • Experience teaching and working with children ages (6-11) from inner city communities.
  • Monitor the safe arrival and departure of students from HOLA’s facilities.
  • Afternoon hours Mon-Fri (2:00pm-6:00pm) during the academic school year.

§  Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

§  Ability to be a strong role model for youth during all working hours.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

  • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential or B.A. in Education and progress toward a credential or M.A. in Education-related field
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

·Experience working with youth in a classroom setting. 

·Experience working with youth with specific learning disabilities and IEPs. 

·Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

·Skilled in word, excel and Google docs.

·Experienced in prioritizing and multi-tasking in a busy work environment.

·Excellent communication skills.

·A strong desire to interface with and serve as a role model for youth.

·Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

·Clean driving record and ability to drive students in 10 passenger vans for events/ field trips. (Minimum driving experience 5 years, 3 in CA)

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The building environment does not provide air conditioning and heat in all areas. Outdoor work is expected in some cases.
