The Opportunity.

The Trustees is seeking a full-time, seasonal Ranger for Doane’s Falls Reservation to welcome visitors to the property, convey property regulations, and perform basic stewardship support at this and other nearby properties. A seasonal Ranger would be expected to work 4, 10-hour days, focusing primarily on weekends, from mid-May through early September. Exact season start and stop times are yet to be determined. The seasonal Ranger ensures that hundreds of visitors each year have a safe and positive experience on the property by answering questions, providing information, and promoting the Trustees. Doane’s Falls and other nearby properties experienced tremendous influx of visitors in 2020, which has led to major issues with swimming, erosion, trash, vandalism, overcrowding, and unsafe road conditions. Working with the Royalston Police Department, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Trustees staff at Tully Lake Campground, this seasonal Ranger will provide on-the-ground support to inform visitors of regulations, respond to unauthorized swimming, overcrowding, dangerous roadside conditions, and provide a staff presence to deter unsafe use of the property. They also perform general cleaning and/or maintenance of the Doane’s Falls and other nearby properties, trails, and parking lots. The Ranger reports to the Associate Field Director for inland properties.

In This Role You Will:

  • Weekend (likely Fri-Mon) site supervision and enforcement of property regulations, greeting visitors in a consistent, professional, welcoming manner, while answering questions about the Trustees, property regulations, and property features.
  • Signage and rope fencing installation and maintenance
  • Waste management and trash in parking lots and on trails at Doane’s Falls and other nearby properties
  • Reporting safety concerns, incidents, and maintenance needs to the Associate Field Director.
  • Representing the Trustees in accordance with the organizational mission and visitor engagement strategy
  • Providing information about the benefits of a Trustees membership
  • Cleaning and inspecting parking lots, and trails. Occasional work on trail/maintenance projects may be required
  • Enforcing rules and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation

About Doane’s Falls

The pastoral quality of this reservation showcases a quiet country stream as it turns turbulent. The waterfalls on Lawrence Brook just before it enters Tully Lake indeed grab one’s attention, both visually and audibly. The falls treat visitors to a bit of nature’s frothy frenzy, if not fury. As Lawrence Brook drops and swirls, its water continually shapes mid-stream boulders, flat granite slabs and small islands. A half-mile trail leads down one side of the stream, offering great vantage points. Swimming is not allowed at this property.
