Faith in Place Job Announcement

Title: Policy Director

Hours: Full-time

Salary Range: $65,000 to $85,000, depending upon experience

Reports to: Executive Director

Office Location: Chicago

Faith in Place empowers Illinois people of all faiths to be leaders in caring for the Earth, providing resources to educate, connect, and advocate for healthier communities.

Position Description

Faith in Place’s Policy Director facilitates public policy advocacy for environmental justice by working with people of diverse faiths. The Policy Director mobilizes people of faith to take collective action to address environmental injustices in Illinois and across the country. The communities suffering from the harms of toxic waste, lead contamination in drinking water, and pollution from close proximity to power plants most often tend to be communities of color and/or economically-disadvantaged communities. Decades of racially-motivated disinvestments and limited economic opportunities make these communities even more vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, food insecurity, flooding, and air and water pollution.

People of faith bring a critical voice to the environmental movement by advocating for justice. The Policy Director works with faith communities to advance public policy that prioritizes green economic revitalization in the areas of Illinois that suffer most from environmental degradation. A just transition away from dirty, fossil fuel-based sources of energy to clean, renewable sources of energy improves health outcomes, provides economic opportunities that help reduce violence, and creates a future that is promising for all.

This advocacy is accomplished through Faith in Place’s evidence-based education organizing methodology – the Green Team model. The Policy Director empowers a small group of people within each house of worship to organize their larger faith community to take action to care for the Earth and build healthier communities.

Faith in Place is the Illinois affiliate of the national multi-faith environmental organization, Interfaith Power & Light (IPL). The Policy Director collaborates with IPL partners to advance environmental justice policies across the country and implement national priorities at the state level.

Responsibilities

·        Work with clergy, Green Teams, and houses of worship throughout Illinois on public policies that prioritize career pathways for returning citizens and foster care alumni in solar, wind, and energy efficiency jobs.

·        Provide leadership in the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition for implementation of the Future Energy Jobs Act.

·        Organize constituent meetings and town halls with policymakers to hear faith concerns in order to shape and advance an environmental justice agenda.

·        Travel to the State Capitol in Springfield when the Illinois General Assembly is in session. Advocate for our moral obligation to care for the Earth on behalf of Faith in Place’s faith partners. Educate elected officials and lobby on behalf of the environmental justice agenda and legislative agenda of the Faith in Place Action Fund.

·        Lead Faithful Citizen Workshops to teach people about the legislative process in Illinois, discuss pending environmental policies, explain the importance of faith-based advocacy, and identify ways that people of diverse faiths can be civically engaged.

·        Mobilize hundreds of people to travel to the Illinois State Capitol for an annual Advocacy Day.

·        Attend regular meetings to collaborate with coalition partners, representing Faith in Place and the Faith in Place Action Fund.

·        Actively work with members of the Illinois Legislative Black and Brown Caucuses to advance legislation that advances the principals of the Faith in Place Action Fund (Faith in Place’s lobbying arm, a 501c4):

o  Curb climate change while creating clean energy jobs, improving our energy efficiency and our renewable portfolio standards to create wind and solar jobs for all.

o  Prioritize energy efficiency, wind, and solar jobs for areas that suffer disproportionately from air pollution.

o  Require a just transition plan from polluting jobs to clean energy jobs.

o  Create access to clean energy jobs for returning citizens, foster care alumni, and those across the state in economically-challenged and economically-disadvantaged communities.

o  Achieve access to local, healthy food for the more than 500,000 people in Illinois who live in food scarce neighborhoods.

o  Emphasize policy solutions for water justice for communities who suffer disproportionately from basement flooding, sewer backups, and lead in water lines.

·        Adapt advocacy plans as needed to respond to local and national events, and to reflect the goals of Faith in Place, the Faith in Place Action Fund, and coalition partners.

·        Partner with Interfaith Power & Light (IPL) to address environmental justice policies at the national level by participating in regular conference calls, attending an annual conference, and implementing strategy at the state level.
