Position: Director of Social Services

Classification: Exempt

Reports to: Executive Director

Supervises: Resource Center Coordinator and Program Associate

Position Summary:

The Director of Social Services is a member of the Leadership Team and is responsible for all work pertaining to the delivery of social services to clients and meal guests of Shepherd’s Table. In addition, this person will routinely collaborate on the provision of social services with Montgomery County’s Services to End and Prevent Homelessness (SEPH), the Continuum of Care (CoC) and partner nonprofits at Progress Place - Interfaith Works (IW) and Kelly Collaborative Medicine (KCM). Finally, this person will work with the Executive Director to establish the strategic direction and management of the Social Services Division which includes the Resource Center Coordinator and Program Associate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Organization and Management:

• Member of the organization’s Leadership Team which meets weekly and serves as the Executive Director’s kitchen cabinet

• In-house expert on conflict resolution, mental health first aide, and de-escalation training to continuously improve staff and volunteer interactions with clients and meal guests at Progress Place

• Supervision of the Resource Center Coordinator and Program Associate

• Recruitment and retention of 15 -20 Resource Center volunteers annually

• Oversight of the Weekend Day Program to provide a safe and constructive space for clients and meal guests to be indoors and participate in structured individual and group activities

• Oversight of weekly Eye Clinic and Clothes Closet and monthly Homeless Person’s Representation Project expungement clinic services managed by the RC Coordinator

• Oversight of the Salesforce database to track all services offered to clients and the impact of those services on the furtherance of every client’s progress in creating pathways to self-sufficiency

• Oversight of the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), a HUD database used by Montgomery County’s SEPH to track clients and monitor their progress toward self-sufficiency

Direct Services:

• Provision of situational counseling services to clients and meal guests of Progress Place in collaboration with SEPH, IW and KCM

• Supervision of general, micro-counseling services provided to clients by ST staff and volunteers

• Quarterly training of ST staff and volunteers in conflict resolution, mental health first aide, crisis de-escalation, Trauma Informed Care, Harm Reduction and Housing First

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proven success in working with organizational leadership and building strong relationships both internally and externally

• Strong verbal and written communications skills, persuasive and passionate communicator

• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people both internally and externally

• High energy, positive, can do attitude, flexibility, ability to work independently and as a member of a team to fulfill the mission of the team

• Ability to recognize and admit growing edges, errors in judgement and to learn and move on

• Ability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends and evenings as necessary

Education and Experience:

• Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or master’s degree in a clinical or social services field required

• Senior management and administrative experience required

• Ability to work well in a culturally diverse environment required

• Experience working with people experiencing poverty and homelessness preferred

• A track record of effectively leading a team to reach programmatic and organizational goals

• Bi-lingual English-Spanish a plus
