Maryland Family Network (MFN) ensures that very young children have strong families, quality early learning environments, and a champion for their interests. Through two-generation programs that support parents to become economically self-sufficient, raise healthy, successful children, and find quality child care; through regional services that help child care professionals improve their practice; and through public policy advocacy of programs and policies that benefit families with young children, MFN strives to ensure that all Maryland children are cared for by adults who are skilled to raise them in environments that are conducive to growth and development.
Overview of the Position
The Development Director leads all aspects of MFN’s resource development strategy and its implementation, giving vision and leadership by effectively implementing a sustainable funding strategy to meet operating needs. Fund raising responsibilities include managing MFN’s Benevon Sustainable Funding model, called Build the Nest, which introduces individuals to MFN, cultivates donors through site visits, events, and regular communications, and tracks all transactions. The Development Director is expected to secure major gifts face-to-face, with a priority given to growing and stewarding multi-year giving. Fund raising duties also include grant writing and reporting and annual written appeals to a variety of constituents. Communication responsibilities include providing development content for general organizational communications such as annual reports, e-newsletters, MFN’s website, and social media. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and supports the work of the Build the Nest Committee of the Board of Directors. The Development/Communications Associate reports to the Development Director. This position is exempt under the classification of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The standards are created by the Federal government. Exempt employees are salaried and perform a job that fits under the executive, administrative, or professional category of the Federal standards.
· Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college, preferably in business administration, marketing, or a related field;
· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fund development, sales, financial services, or business development, including direct-ask and negotiating experience and supervision of staff;
· Documentation of a successful history of fund/sales development and implementation of a fund development plan;
· Experience with the Benevon Sustainable Funding model is a plus;
· Proficiency in Salesforce or similar CRM; and
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Responsibilities of the Director of Development
· Meet MFN’s annual goals for restricted and unrestricted revenue;
· Expand the number and amount of major gifts given each year to MFN;
· Diversify MFN’s sources of support;
· Strengthen the organization’s fundraising capacity;
· Recommend and implement structural changes that may be needed to maximize resources;
· Design and implement fundraising plans for Build the Nest, annual giving, planned giving, and all other solicitations;
· Oversee the development of all grant proposals;
· Supervise the development staff, monitor and regularly report on progress to ensure that all financial goals are achieved;
· Understand and follow current best practices, rules, policies, guidelines and procedures related to fund raising activities, and ensure that all development personnel, activities, systems, and procedures strictly adhere to the highest ethical, accounting, reporting, and all other applicable standards;
· Coordinate with finance and program staff to ensure that all funder requirements are met and reports to funders are completed and submitted on time;
· Oversee fund development office systems and procedures that track fund development activities, including
o Supervision of donor and gift record keeping process;
o Management of the data base and all records, files, and gifts processed through Salesforce; and
o Oversight of pledge reminder and acknowledgement processes.
