Job Description:


The Senior Director of Finance sets and communicates financial management strategy, manages the budget and daily finance and business operations, and collaborates with external finance and accounting vendors and internal cross-departmental teams to realize organizational priorities. The Senior Director is a critical thought partner to the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, school and academic teams, and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. The Senior Director of Finance reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.


Budgeting, Finance Strategy, and Planning

  • Lead fiscal planning and implementation of the annual budget
  • Analyze key metrics to inform organizational decision-making
  • Develop financial policies and protocols in conjunction with the Board of Trustees
  • Managing the processes for financial forecasting and budgets, and overseeing the preparation of all financial reporting
  • Act as a strategic business partner to the executive leadership team
  • Translating benchmarking insights into actionable budgeting strategies
  • Interpreting analyses summarizes trade-offs and crafts recommendations for a leadership team that align with strategy and priorities
  • Supporting contingency planning to ensure the organization can manage unexpected financial situations
  • Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the company’s plan for growth and expansion
  • Support the Board of Trustees Finance Committee by preparing financial reports and attending Finance Committee meetings
  • Lead and manage the finance team, which includes Business Program Associate and the Director of Grants Management

Internal Accounting Processes and Controls

  • In partnership with an accounting firm direct preparation and transmission of financial statements, annual audit and tax filings, and financial and business compliance reports to banks and city, state, and federal agencies 
  • Direct financial reporting for federal and state grant activities
  • Lead procurement and compliance activities of the organization
  • Responsible for implementation of accounting processes and controls
  • Manage purchasing and cash management activities
  • Collaborate with cross-departmental teams to set and manage internal budgets
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting data for federal funders, foundations, investors and company’s Board of Trustees
  • Oversee cash, investments, and asset management
  • Utilize forward-looking models and activity-based analyses to provide financial insight into the organization’s plans and operating budgets

Capital Finance and Risk Management

  • Ensure that construction and real estate projects are financed in ways that assure the long-term financial health and viability of the organization
  • Developing and guiding the implementation of risk management and mitigation processes
  • Manage capital portfolio and cash management
  • Collaborate with the operations team to develop and implement capital needs plans
  • Establish and develop relations with  management and external partners and stakeholders
  • Identify, acquire and implement systems and software to provide critical financial and operational information

Skills and Characteristics

  • Strong understanding of non-profit accounting with direct oversight of the accounting function within a non-profit organization, including in the execution of audits
  • Significant knowledge of treasury functions including debt covenants, cash flow, and financial ratio projections, and banking
  • Knowledge of general accounting procedures and experience leading the budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes for an organization or large group
  • Strong general management, leadership, and relationship-building skills

Educational Background and Work Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in a relevant field from competitive colleges or universities
  • Three to five years of relevant, progressive responsibility and demonstrated success in financial management roles
  • Excellent track record of leading, managing, and developing high-performing teams.
