Title: Science Diversity Program Coordinator

Employment: This is a full-time position with full fringe benefits from the Research Foundation of CUNY.

Organization: The Center for Achievement in Science Education (CASE) is hiring a Science Diversity Program Coordinator. Part of Brooklyn College’s School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, CASE works to increase the number of traditionally underrepresented students who pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in science, scientific research, and technology, as well as jobs in various professional sectors.

CASE at Brooklyn College was recently a designated winner of an “Inspiring Programs in STEM” Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The award was based on CASE’s efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

Description: The Science Diversity Program Coordinator will provide support for and coordination of efforts to improve the success of well-qualified underrepresented minority students, in the service of increasing the diversity of students entering biomedical research.

Responsibilities: The Program coordinator works with the staff of a suite of grant-funded programs that support the development of diverse college students studying college-level science. The programs stress not only science content. They also aim to equip students with the cognitive abilities, personal skills, and psychological resilience to succeed in college-level science classes as well as having a focus on undergraduate research and preparation for graduate work in the STEM areas.

In addition to advising and counseling students in the program, the Science Diversity Program Coordinator Position has responsibility for:

  • Logistical issues in the planning and executing of both summer and academic year programs and events.
  • Teaching small groups about research and research-related skills using proven active-learning-based pedagogies.
  • Interacting with faculty in disciplines across the college.
  • Creating and promoting program-related social media content.
  • Hiring and training peer tutors who provide supportive workshops for courses included in the program.
  • Developing/hosting professional development and academic workshops for students.
  • Helping with public relations and web content describing CASE’s efforts to reach potential students and internal and external entities.
  • Supporting collaborative college initiatives such as Brooklyn College Science Research Day, a 30+ year tradition that is a showplace for undergraduate research, most recently run on the Whova platform due to the pandemic.
  • Developing new program initiatives that further the goals of CASE.

Requirements: The Science Diversity Program Coordinator should have:

  • Program administration experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity in STEM or related areas.
  • A strong background in the sciences including experience teaching science in formal or informal contexts using confirmed best practices for STEM pedagogy.
  • Research experience at least at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience with standard computer applications (Microsoft Suite, Slack, popular social media platforms, Google Suite, and photo-editing software such as Adobe InDesign and Photoshop).
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree minimum, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Partial virtual work possible but requires in-person work with students as a major component of the position.
