The Waterfront Alliance is a civic organization that brings together a diverse coalition of more than 1,100 stakeholders with ties to the New York–New Jersey waterways. The organization’s mission is to inspire and effect resilient, revitalized, and accessible coastlines for all communities.

Waterfront Alliance is a leading advocate in the New York–New Jersey metropolitan region to reshape our harbor and the surrounding waterways into a shared resource, and to help our coastal communities prepare for the reality of sea level rise and coastal storms. After more than a decade of highlighting the urgent need to protect our coastal region from the risks posed by climate change and sea level rise, Waterfront Alliance has stepped into a new role to build broad consensus around our region’s most critical resilience investments and policy changes, including the execution of a multi-year advocacy campaign. 

Position Description 

The communications manager will work collaboratively across all departments to execute a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that elevates the organization’s mission and thought leadership, increases audience growth and engagement on digital platforms, and garners increased press. The position will also play a key role in helping to implement the forthcoming resilience campaign (a public relations firm will be hired to manage the campaign). A new position, the communications manager role offers the right candidate the opportunity to grow the role and over time build out the communications team. The ideal candidate will be both creative and strategic, producing high quality content to advance the Waterfront Alliance brand and mission. This fulltime position is based at our office in Lower Manhattan and reports to the chief operating officer, in close collaboration with the senior director of programs. 

Responsibilities 

Public Relations 

  • In close collaboration with the president, chief operating officer, and senior director of programs lead the organization’s public relations, with a focus on advancing key programmatic areas and thought leadership opportunities for staff and board:
  • Strategically prioritize media opportunities and support staff in preparing talking points, speeches, presentations, and other materials as needed
  • Cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of relevant issues and Waterfront Alliance programs, events, and achievements
  • Prepare statements, quotes, etc. and distribute to press in a timely manner 
  • Support the president and senior staff in writing and distributing press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor; make pitch calls 

Digital Communications 

  • Oversee editorial calendar, including maintaining dates and deliverables
  • Track daily news as it relates to the waterfront; collate and share relevant news links with staff
  • Oversee content development for WaterWire bi-weekly digital newsletter 
  • Design and send email announcements and maintain MailChimp audiences 
  • Manage social media presence, which includes creating and sharing content across all platforms  
  • Manage website content and updates 
  • Track analytics across all platforms, measure progress and growth, and translate into reports 
  • Coordinate videographers and photographers for events 

Events and Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Oversee marketing and communications for the annual city-wide City of Water Day and other programmatic events 
  • Support the development team with marketing of annual Waterfront Conference and Heroes of the Harbor gala, including designing invitations, creating social media content, and securing media sponsors 
  • Create targeted communications and engagement opportunities for Alliance Partners, including vetting and sharing Alliance Partner events on online platforms and over time identify ways to further engage and leverage this key group of stakeholders  
  • Support program staff with creation of materials and marketing of programs and campaigns 

Branding 

  • With the chief operating officer, oversee the continued development and use of the Waterfront Alliance brand, including the development of Waterfront Alliance-branded materials (print and digital):
  • Support design and production of brochures, fact sheets, reports, PowerPoint presentations, etc.  
  • Prepare press kits (digital and print) for different target audiences 
  • Help ensure consistency of all marketing, promotions, and communications across platforms
  • Help ensure staff use of style and brand guidelines 

Desired Skills and Experiences: 

  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and motivated to lead all aspects of public relations and communications. Additionally, the candidate will possess: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, or a related field 
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience working in public relations/communications for political campaigns or nonprofit organizations 
  • Experience in designing and executing communications strategies and campaigns, and demonstrated ability to build relationships with media  
  • Well-honed social media skills and ability to integrate social media into larger communications goals
  • A demonstrated record of securing media placements, including features, op-eds, letters to the editor, and/or broadcast and radio appearances
  • Deadline-oriented and ability to turn around high quality work on a tight timeline
  • Creative, organized, and strategic approach to work
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with an ability to produce clean and engaging content 
  • Excellent project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines  
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, MailChimp, WordPress, Google Analytics, and SEO
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Comfortable learning and implementing new technologies quickly
  • Interest in environment, sustainability, and climate issues
