Position Title: Director of Outreach & Missions

 POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Lead, leverage and focus the talent, committees, partnerships, and resources across the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church community to build the Outreach & Missions ministries to make an increasing difference in the lives of our vulnerable neighbors in need, near and far, in ways that are relevant and transformative. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Vision and Strategic Leadership:

•      Lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the Outreach & Missions ministries of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (FAPC), in close collaboration with clergy, staff, committees and other key internal and external stakeholders, to meet agreed upon goals focused on helping people in need.

•      Maintain active engagement and knowledge of current best practices, issues and opportunities to continuously inform and improve policies, strategies, programs, plans and impact. 

•      Protect and enhance FAPC’s reputation as a leading voice, champion and innovator for making a difference in the lives of neighbors in need in New York City and beyond. 

Organizational Leadership, Development and Culture:

•      Actively advocate FAPC’s values and promote an environment of respect, diversity, inclusion, and collaboration that purposely attracts, retains, develops, and inspires a talented high-performing team of leaders, staff, laypersons, partners and other volunteers. 

 Program Leadership:

•      Lead, develop, assess and continuously improve the leaders, staff, strategic business plans, execution and impact of FAPC’s Outreach & Missions programs to make an increasing difference in the lives of our neighbors in need near and far, with a particular initial focus on: 

  • Ecumenical Outreach Partnership - FAPC, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Saint Thomas Church collaboration focused on guiding and supporting men and women experiencing homelessness and others in need of social services.
  • Homeless Ministries - chaplaincy and special support and recognition events for homeless neighbors.
  • Meals on Heels - preparing and delivering home-cooked meals to our homebound neighbors.
  • Mission Partner Group - covenant partnerships and mission trips with 15 organizations locally and abroad.
  • David B. Skinner Shelter - 12-bed facility caring for and supporting men awaiting a transition to permanent housing, which is currently closed due to COVID-19 and its future plans to be determined.
  • Targeted support programs for refugee families in need  

Communications and Engagement:

•      Collaborate with the FAPC Director of Communications & Development to build and enable an effective communications strategy and set of programs within and outside FAPC to drive a deep and consistent level of awareness, understanding, and support, particularly with respect to goals, strategic priorities, program impact, financial performance, fundraising, and opportunities.

•      Maintain and enhance working relationships and impact with key internal and external stakeholders, partners and other key constituencies, including: 

  • FAPC Leadership, staff and committees
  • FAPC Outreach & Missions leaders, staff and committees o St. Patrick’s Cathedral o Saint Thomas Church
  • Public and private foundations and donors
  • Government agencies, such as the New York Department of Homeless Services, Disaster Interfaith Services, and Immigration Services o
  • New York City Presbytery
  • Key allied organizations
  • Media
  • Volunteers

•      Develop and deliver regular educational opportunities for the FAPC community to learn and become more meaningfully involved in the Outreach & Missions efforts of the church and its partners.

•      Serve as lead spokesperson for FAPC’s Outreach & Missions work, including with the media, partner organizations and policymakers, and represent FAPC at conferences and other events as appropriate.

Financial Management and Administration:

•      Collaborate with the FAPC Director of Finance to ensure strong governance and day-to-day operations across all Outreach & Missions areas, including effective strategic financial decision-making, budgeting, management routines, reporting, compliance, and the negotiation and execution of contracts on behalf of the organization.

Fundraising:

•      Lead the development and activation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy, which is tightly aligned to FAPC’s overall plans, to drive diverse and growing sources of revenue for FAPC’s Outreach & Missions work. 

•      Cultivate and maintain value-based relationships with current and prospective funders within and outside FAPC and encourage active engagement by senior pastors and other leaders in targeted fundraising opportunities.

•      Lead the effective and timely development, execution and stewardship reporting surrounding all grant opportunities.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

•      Holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Divinity or a related field. 

•      Possesses a minimum of five years of general management experience, ideally operating in the non-profit sector.

•      Demonstrated passion for and experience working in outreach and/or missions in a faith-based environment.  

•      Experience with accessing and leveraging New York City community and other external resources.

•      Demonstrated aptitude for cultivating and stewarding funding relationships, including experience diversifying and growing funding streams.
