About us:

Huru International is a 501(c)(3) organization working to keep girls in school and young women healthy through the provision of high quality reusable sanitary pads in conjunction with comprehensive health programming. Nearly 1 million girls in Kenya miss school each month during their periods, which has serious personal and educational consequences, like falling behind in class, being held back or dropping out altogether. Huru works to ensure no girl or woman misses out because of her period through high quality menstrual products, skills-based training and health education sessions containing information on menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, HIV-prevention, gender-based violence and more. Huru has reached over 165,000 girls and young women across under-served communities in East Africa.

Huru is looking for a dynamic, thoughtful and effective communicator to amplify its message and grow the organization’s donor base and visibility. This position will gain an intimate understanding of menstrual health and hygiene and its intersections with public health, poverty, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, education and economic opportunity. This role will also work closely with the Nairobi, Kenya office, offering an unrestricted view of Huru’s programs, target constituents and the larger landscape of menstrual health in East Africa.

Primary Goals;

  • Strategize, plan and execute Huru’s marketing and fundraising strategy, with the primary goals of donations and visibility
  • Create and maintain external-facing communications for a range of stakeholders and audiences including (but not limited to); donor project reporting; campaign content, PR releases, print and digital ads, and more
  • Gain institutional knowledge from working closely with the Nairobi, Kenya office as well as across stakeholders and leadership

You will;

  • Create targeted fundraising strategy alongside stakeholders and execute the strategy, within budgetary requirements, resources available and timeline
  • Manage, create content for and oversee implementation of quarterly campaigns for major fundraising events, such as Menstrual Hygiene Day (5/28) and Giving Tuesday
  • Own the email marketing and blog channels - create regular, engaging content for both platforms
  • Own relationships with third-party or outside marketing agencies, assisting them with Huru’s paid media campaigns, SEO and website development projects
  • Manage the social media officer and collaborate on compelling content for Huru's social platforms
  • Act as the communications hub for inbound marketing or communications requests – working with the Executive Director, Country Director in Kenya, Program Director and Director of Development as needed to fulfill communications requests
  • Support the Executive Director and Country Director with strategic communications and outreach
  • Prepare project updates for donors and partners
  • Assist the Director of Development as needed with proposals and concept notes
  • Attend conferences, events, or speaking opportunities to learn and share what we're doing to promote gender equity, sexual and reproductive health and menstrual health

About you;

  • Minimum 2 years experience in fundraising, marketing, communications or community building for a non-profit or female-forward brand
  • Exceptional written, oral, editing, presenting and listening skills
  • Strong interest in women’s health, menstrual health and international development
  • Demonstrated experience in digital or grassroots marketing strategy, preferably in a high-growth setting
  • Competency with Google Analytics, social media and marketing trends, social listening, and measuring digital engagement and conversion
  • Experience marketing or fundraising for underserved communities a plus
  • Comfort with working for a small, passionate and resourceful team and wearing multiple hats in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Nonprofit database or CRM experience a plus
  • Experience with Squarespace or web design a plus
