The Fund for Public Health in New York City, (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City

 

Program Overview

The Healthy Eating Unit within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s (DOHMH) Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention is seeking educators to conduct garden-themed nutrition lessons for children and cooking demonstrations for adults at child care centers located in historically disinvested communities across New York City as part of the DOHMH’s Farm to Preschool (F2P) initiative. Programming will be conducted virtually in the spring and will either continue virtually or potentially move to in-person programming in the summer depending on COVID-19 conditions. F2P engages with families, children, and staff at childcare centers to influence healthy eating habits and food environments at the center, in the home, and in the community.


This position will be housed within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, which strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes, among New Yorkers. The Bureau addresses poor nutrition, inadequate physical activity, and tobacco use, which are key risk factors that lead to chronic disease. The Bureau recognizes that a history of discrimination and social injustices have led to unfair and unjust barriers to health and, in turn, risk factors for chronic disease disproportionately and unfairly affect some New Yorkers more than others. The Bureau aims to work with partners in government and in the community to create new and change existing systems, policies, programs and environments to prevent chronic disease and promote health equity. The Bureau sits in the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness.


Position Details

F2P Culinary Educators will lead the implementation of F2P activities at childcare centers from April-September 2021. They will oversee and work with the F2P Bilingual Educator to provide education and support for families and staff at childcare centers as they work towards achieving program goals. They will also attend weekly Monday morning meetings remotely or at the DOHMH office in Long Island City, Queens. From mid-April to the beginning of June, F2P Culinary Educators will lead remote implementation of a garden-themed nutrition education curriculum for children and remotely supporting center staff with setting up and maintaining gardens. From July to the end of September F2P Culinary Educators will lead virtual and/or in-person cooking demonstrations for adults and encourage families to shop at farmers markets and other local produce venues. This is an excellent opportunity for a culinary or nutrition student or early professional to gain hands-on experience as part of an exciting, multi-component initiative. The F2P Culinary Educators report to the F2P Coordinator. They will work approximately 16-25 hours per week and will be paid $24 per hour. Paid training will be provided.


Responsibilities

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

·        Act as lead educator, guiding the work of the F2P Bilingual Educator and working with childcare center staff to ensure all program activities run smoothly and according to plan.

·        Prepare for and lead garden-themed nutrition lessons for children attending childcare centers and encourage teachers to conduct follow up lessons.

·        Assist childcare centers in setting up and maintaining indoor and/or outdoor container or in-ground gardens by providing technical assistance remotely.

·        Prepare for and lead cooking demonstrations for adults following curriculum protocols.

·        Follow program protocols including purchasing and expense tracking, maintaining food safety, educator timekeeping, and ensuring integrity of programming.

·        If in-person, set-up, break-down, and properly maintain and store table, tent and all cooking equipment and educational materials.

·        Conduct activities to support the program including marketing, evaluation, and data entry, as needed.

·        Attend weekly meetings on Mondays virtually or at DOHMH offices in Long Island City, Queens.

·        Communicate issues and scheduling changes with F2P Coordinator, as they arise.


Required Qualification and Skills

·        Experience implementing cooking demonstrations and/or experience or training in nutrition or culinary arts.

·        Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds (to and from storage site to workshop location each day), willing and able to stand for long periods of time (applicable if programming is conducted in-person)

·        Comfort and ability to work with and travel to different communities across New York City. (travel required if programming is in-person).

·        ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection Course (prior to April 27th, 2021).

·        Commitment to 2-3 days per week of work Tuesday through Friday at childcare centers (virtually and potentially in-person) and weekly Monday morning meetings held virtually or at DOHMH in Long Island City, Queens.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

·        Experience working with young children.

·        Experience gardening, especially in containers.

·        Experience working with diverse populations and ability to adapt recipes to the culture of communities served.

·        Experience with regional food systems and food security issues and the underlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities

·        Extremely organized with superb attention to detail.

·        Excellent presentation, interpersonal and communications skills. Comfort communicating virtually using platforms like Zoom and/or Google Class.

·        Experience developing relationships with community partners.

·        Preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish, Arabic, or Bengali.
