The Staff Attorney will be primarily responsible for providing direct deportation removal defense representation. Clients may include detained adults or unaccompanied minors or both. The Staff Attorney will work under the direct supervision of a Managing Attorney and in collaboration with their fellow attorneys. Support for the Staff Attorney comes from paralegals, administrative assistants and case managers.


The Staff Attorney provides competent immigration legal representation and removal defense in a high-volume varied immigration legal practice that includes limited-scope counsel and advice, bond-only representation, and full-scope representation for all available remedies afforded to a client before the immigration court.

This position will be in our Family Unity Project, a team working to help reunify separated families.


Essential Functions

1. Screening and providing limited counsel and advice to individuals found ineligible for legal representation pursuant to the funding requirements;

2. Representing individuals for initial or prolonged custody redetermination hearings;

3. Prepare and submit various Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) removal defense applications and supporting evidence

4. Prepare and submit various EOIR waivers

5. Providing legal representation to qualified clients in immigration court for all available remedies before the Los Angeles Immigration Court;

6. Prepare materials for bond hearings

  • Strong grasp on legal concepts, especially as they pertain to immigration;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with staff and clients;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem solving;
  • Highly resourceful team player, with the ability to also excel independently;
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of constituent service and response.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • J.D., and 1-3 years applicable experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure;
  • Enthusiasm for working at a progressive, start-up organization;
  • Passion for social justice for immigrants required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Classification and Work Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position. Work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with flexibility required based on the needs of the organization.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment as well as a variety of other settings including but not limited to court, shelters, etc. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.

 

Travel

No overnight travel is expected for this position. There will be occasional local day travel.
