Description

The Associate Director provides leadership in designing, implementing and evaluating a

comprehensive annual giving program that will increase and sustain a long-term base of

support in alignment with the mission and long-range plans of CalBG. The Associate Director

contributes to the training and supervision of the Advancement Coordinator and works

collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and trustees.


Essential Responsibilities include:

Annual Giving

○ Build CalBG’s base of operating support through the annual fund, utilizing

various tools to ensure success, including coordinating direct mail, online, and

personal appeals

○ Increase exposure of restricted and unrestricted annual giving opportunities, by

planning, marketing and coordinating such efforts

○ Identify and secure sponsorships for programs, public events and fundraising

activities.

Membership

○ Grow CalBG’s membership program, including the number of member

households, and the amount of revenue generated directly and indirectly

through the program

○ Develop, implement and track membership acquisition, retention, and upgrade

programs

○ Design, implement and maintain member benefit programs

○ Work closely with other departments to align programming, publicity and

outreach.

○ Provide staff leadership at member appreciation and outreach events

Fundraising Events

○ Provide staff leadership for appreciation, cultivation and celebration events,

including the Forever California annual fundraising Gala. This includes working

with a volunteer committee, securing sponsorships, managing an auction, etc.

Budget and Finance

○ Effectively manage areas of budgetary responsibility, monitor income and

expenses on a regular basis, and with the Director of Advancement, take

corrective action if benchmarks are not being met.

○ Ensure proper handling and recording of all checks, cash and payments in

accordance with department practices and organizational procedures

Donor Relations and Cultivation

○ Support the development of CalBG’s planned giving efforts, including the

Susanna Bixby Bryant Council

○ Develop stewardship communication elements

○ Build and maintain relationships with donors, including meetings and personal

visits

○ Provide outstanding customer service to donors and visitors to CalBG.

○ Assist with prospect and donor research, grant writing and campaign planning

as needed.

Management and Operations

○ General management and maintenance of donor/fundraising/member database

(Altru) in partnership with the department and business office

○ Update and maintain department policies and procedures as needed in

partnership with the Director of Advancement

○ Serve as proxy for Director of Advancement, on occasion. Other duties as

assigned.

Qualifications

As a seasoned, goal-driven development professional, the Associate Director will have at least

five years of professional fundraising and/or nonprofit management experience, preferably

working for an educational, botanic garden/museum or other cultural organization.

● Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required.

● Excellent judgment, customer service, diplomacy and discretion with confidential

information are essential.

● Flexibility, collegiality, creativity and sense of humor desired.

● Grant writing, research and campaign experience is a plus.

● Familiarity with Altru software is strongly preferred.

● Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.

● Interest in CalBG’s mission is essential.


Compensation range: $68,500-$80,000, commensurate with experience and track record.
