Newark Educators’ Charter School seeks a school nurse to serve as the primary advocate for the health and well-being of students and staff within the school. The employee must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require confidentiality discretionary judgment and analysis.



  • Making recommendations for Health Policies, updating school policies, procedures and work standards for school health program.
  • Monitoring compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.
  • Attending daily to student attendance providing families of students who are absent with daily phone calls and records efforts. Working with student support services for next steps.(CPIS, SSS, CCC, I&RS)
  • Work with Attendance Committee to lead the paperwork on Truancy
  • Preparing health reports for direct supervisor, Board of Trustees, and health department as needed.
  • Collaborating with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program.(DCP&P and or other health/mental services)
  • Negotiating professional and medical services essentials to the school health program.
  • Providing first aid care and medically prescribed services.
  • Maintaining and ensuring confidentiality of complete, up-to-date student health records (i.e. immunization data, referrals, etc.) Complete and submit all medical forms and reports in a timely manner.
  • Serving as a resource person on the School Safety Committee in regards to health issues.
  • Providing staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
  • Fulfilling State requirements and district policies for communicable disease control and exclusion/readmission of pupils for reasons of health. Reviewing all doctor and medical notes submitted to the school, and providing instruction to all teachers on methods to detect signs of communicable disease.
  • Providing follow-up evaluations on students as required, especially when sending student out for psychological and or psychiatric evaluation.
  • Conducting home visits when appropriate along with CPIS as needed.
  • Corresponding with parents on health needs of children.
  • Recording immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
  • Administering medication to students in accordance with NJ State Law.
  • Following protocols in crisis intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbance.
  • Addressing staff annually, in regards to universal precautions and providing other professional development as needed.
  • Selecting and arranging for purchases, and store appropriate medical supplies and equipment necessary to operate a school health office.
  • Assisting in identifying students with health problems that may interfere with effective learning. Advising the school Principal, Child Study Team and instructional personnel when adjustments are required as a result of a health condition.
  • Attending required staff meetings and serving, as appropriate, on committees.
  • Attending off-site meetings and/or state required PD
  • Preferred Bilingual candidate (Spanish/English)
  • Providing training to staff as mandated by state law for compliance



  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
  • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  • Some knowledge of the school’s organization and the community served.
  • Ability to identify abnormal growth and development, and symptoms of disease.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
  • Ability to develop and maintain student health records.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships.
  • Evidence of successful school nurse experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of health services, physical assessments, organization and administration of the school’s health program and clinical experience in a school nurse office.
  • Possess professionalism, strong moral character, integrity, a gentle spirit, and an extremely high degree of initiative.
  • Communicates effectively in English and Spanish, both orally and written.
  • Demonstrates technological abilities: word processing, data management, and information retrieval.

Reports to: Principal

Education, Certification and Requirement:

  • Holds a valid New Jersey Department of Education School Nurse Instructional Standard Certificate
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License and Insurance
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background check

Work Hours - Mon. & Fri. 7:50 - 3:30 / Tues-Wed-Thurs 7:50AM - 4:30PM

10 Month Employee (5 days before school starts - 3 personal days - 10 Sick days)
