Community Engagement Coordinator

The Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth (BAGLY) believes in creating safe and brave spaces to build a strong, youth-led social justice community. Founded in 1980 by LGBTQ+ youth, BAGLY is an organization led by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet the core physical, social, and developmental needs of Greater Boston’s LGBTQ+ youth community.

The community engagement coordinator will help create and implement fun, creative, and impactful outreach strategies in service of BAGLY’s mission to support LGBTQ+ youth in Massachusetts. The catalyzing element of the community engagement coordinator’s job is to raise awareness of BAGLY’s programming, increase participation in its programs and services, and help provide needed resources to LGBTQ+ youth.

The community engagement coordinator will report to the Development and Marketing Manager, but will have responsibilities that reach across the organization, and must therefore be a team player with a strong commitment to collaboration, consistency, and communication.

The following are important areas of responsibility along with some core tasks:

Community Outreach:

  • Proactively seek opportunities to speak with youth and adult audiences about BAGLY’s programs and services, including activities like:
  • Present to GSAs;
  • Speak on panels;
  • Attend community events
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Plan and implement activities aimed at increasing participation in BAGLY’s programs and services
  • Embrace a statewide perspective for outreach activities
  • Assist with BAGLY’s Wednesday night programming and weekly events
  • Supervise outreach Health Education and Risk Reduction Team (HEARRT) peer leader
  • Keep an inventory and proactively order BAGLY swag and other supplies
  • Implement field scans of how youth are communicating and what will engage youth membership in BAGLY’s programs and services.

Organizational duties:

  • Pay meticulous attention to data collection and analysis, both for reporting requirements and to hone outreach efforts
  • Assist with outreach to BAGLY’s base of supporters, including volunteers, individual donors, and institutional funders
  • Actively connect and collaborate with your peers and colleagues on ways to increase program participation
  • Assist with events, including youth-centric events, community events, and fundraising events
  • Provide administrative support as needed to the Development and Marketing team

Qualifications:

The basics:

  • Experience providing outreach programming and services for a nonprofit organization
  • Familiarity with issues confronting the LGBTQ+ youth communities BAGLY serves
  • Computer literacy, especially in working with online social networks, data management, and email clients
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • Strong love or enthusiasm for public speaking
  • Valid Massachusetts driving license required
  • Professional maturity and confidence in asserting appropriate boundaries while working with youth program participants
  • Strong commitment to social justice, anti-oppression, and sex positivity

Cultural Responsiveness and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and understand the impact of intersecting identities
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with BAGLY’s priority populations, including:
  • LGBTQ+ youth of color;
  • Trans youth and trans youth of color;
  • LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness;
  • The House and Ball communities in Massachusetts.

Research indicates that many women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, as well as other members in structurally marginalized groups often only apply for positions if they feel confident they meet 100% of the qualifications stated in a job description. BAGLY recognizes that no one will meet all of the above criteria perfectly and we encourage you to apply if you feel moved to do so!
