About The Neighbor Project:

The Neighbor Project (TNP) is a nonprofit, HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Agency dedicated to helping low to moderate income families reduce debt, build credit, save and ultimately become more financially stable or even buy their first homes. TNP not only provides financial and homebuyer education, but post-purchase counseling, foreclosure prevention and emergency home-repairs. TNP Programs help position working families to be the primary drivers of neighborhood revitalization by educating and preparing families to reduce their debt and begin building wealth. At The Neighbor Project, clients always do the work to change their own financial situation. But that work is leveraged, powerfully, through innovative savings programs that help clients reach their goals more quickly and effectively than they ever would alone. Volunteers, Partners, and Donors multiply their neighbors’ efforts - opening the path to true financial freedom.

About The City of Aurora:

Aurora is located 35 miles West of Chicago and is Illinois’ second largest city with a population of 200,965 (42.9% Hispanic/Latino; 37.1% White; 10.3% African American; and 8.1% Asian with a total foreign-born population of 25.4%). In 2018, Aurora was ranked as the 15th most diverse city in the country by WalletHub, an online personal finance tool, who surveyed the country’s largest 500 cities on their variety of socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, and religious affiliation to determine overall diversity. In terms of education, nearly 80% of adults (79.5%) have a high school diploma or equivalency while 32.4% have a bachelor’s degree and 13.1% have graduate degrees. Aurora, straddles four different counties and so the need can vary significantly by zip code and neighborhood. These include having 27.2% of its families unbanked or under-banked according to US Census Bureau/American Community Survey data compiled in a 2018 Prosperity Now Scorecard (un-banked HH = 8.7% compared with 7.0% statewide and 18.5% under-banked compared with 14.3% across Illinois). Additionally, 17.4% percent of its population has Zero Net Worth (compared 15.7% statewide); and there’s a 38.5% Liquid Asset Poverty Rate compared to 31.9% statewide.
