Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working in partnership with Chicago Public Schools and community organizations to help students stay in school and be successful. During the 2017-2018 school year, CIS of Chicago is partnering with 147 Chicago public schools and expects to connect 1,850 services and programs to more than 71,000 CPS students and their families. In addition, CIS of Chicago places full-time Student Supports Managers in ten Chicago public schools – our Intensive School Partners. Our staff in these schools provide intervention services to a caseload of 50 students who are at risk of dropping out, as well as helping connect support services to the whole school.

The part-time Controller (20 hours/week), reporting directly to the Executive Director, will lead all day-to-day financial aspects of an organization with a budget of nearly $4 million, including responsibility for all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will ensure that CIS of Chicago has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with the Human Resources and Administrative Manager to integrate finance, HR, and IT functions. In addition, the Controller will work closely with senior program and development leadership and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program and fundraising operations.


  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate and support all audit activity and preparation of 990 by external audit firm.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Create monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of CIS of Chicago’s financial status.
  • Lead annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grants/fund period.
  • Develop financial modeling and budget for government and foundation submissions.
  • Process payables; receivables; receipts; invoicing; payroll (working with external payroll processer).
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Support Executive Director and Chief Resource Officer in engaging the Board’s Finance/Resource committee around organizational budgets, forecasts, and issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Develop and manage part-time bookkeeper.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advance degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of seven to 10 years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit.
  • Experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with budget development and forecasting.
  • Extensive knowledge of non-profit accounting
  • Experience in a non-profit that has multiple programs.
