Description

Background: Founded in 2011, Sunday Suppers is a community-based program that works with families experiencing poverty who want to improve their health and well-being. Every week at Sunday Suppers, families share a multi-course healthy dinner around a family table. In addition to eating together, families participate in pre-dinner community conversations and workshops focused on health and nutrition, cultural foodways, easy and accessible cooking techniques, and the importance of family meals. In addition to supporting families to cook and eat nourishing meals together, Sunday Suppers strives to foster long lasting connections and genuine leadership amongst our community of participants past and present. We dream of and work towards a day when Sunday Suppers will be run by and for the community it serves. To this end, we strongly welcome applicants from communities similar to those of our participating families. Sunday Suppers operates in Kensington and Germantown and is in the process of expanding & adding additional sites.


Position Summary: The Cook / Educator is a full time position responsible for all cooking related aspects of our program including menu planning and the preparation of weekly suppers across all sites. The Cook / Educator introduces families to fresh and new foods and healthier ways to prepare them, builds cooking skills and enhances confidence in the kitchen. The Cook / Educator plans and executes cooking demonstrations and creates meals using ingredients that are affordable and accessible, provides simple recipes, and uses equipment families are likely to have in their homes. In addition the Cook / Educator participates in the communication plan and may assist the Director in evaluation and other data management activities. 

 

Responsibilities

●      Plan menus, grocery shop, prepare food, manage kitchen volunteers to execute weekly dinners and monthly alumni dinners.

●      Menus will include recipes that are affordable, use accessible ingredients, are healthier, delicious and culturally appropriate.

●      Ensure kitchen is thoroughly cleaned, items are stored away, and trash is removed.

●      Oversee kitchen volunteers.

●      Mentor and train kitchen Peer Leaders in all aspects of food preparation and service.

●      Manage the Cook’s Cupboard program that provides kitchen equipment to families, including monitoring items and equipment, partner relationships, and potential sources for donations. Collect family assessments and provide each family with what they need 4-6 weeks after enrollment.

●      Attend weekly team meetings and contribute to overall planning and connect menu to each week’s lesson.

●   Conduct one-on-one and group hands-on cooking demonstrations designed to equip families with the skills and knowledge to cook healthy meals at home more regularly.

●      Teach families the basics of food and kitchen safety, food preparation, and making healthy choices and substitutions when cooking.

●   Establish and maintain relationships with restaurants, vendors, and supermarkets to solicit donations of fresh produce, proteins, kitchen equipment and pantry items.

●   Pick up donated items and integrate into weekly menu (often with limited lead time).

●   Follow all guidelines as part of our relationship with our partner sites. 

●   Participate in social media plan

Skills & Experience

●   Minimum 3 years of experience working in a fast-paced food environment and for large groups of people

●   Experience cooking foods from a variety of cultures, including but not limited to, foods of the African and Latinx diaspora.

●   Experience cooking with whole grains, fresh and seasonal vegetables, and assorted animal products.

●   Must have knowledge of food preparation, food service, kitchen procedures and safety.

●   Strong work ethic with ability to communicate clearly and educate on cooking and food preparation techniques.

●   Interest in soliciting food donations and creating partnerships.

●   Demonstrated enthusiasm about cooking accessible and affordable meals.

●   Willing to work both independently and collaboratively.

●   Experience working with diverse communities.

●   Attention to detail, organized, resourceful and flexible.

●   Ability to multi-task, prioritize and make last minute changes as necessary.

●   Flexibility to work evenings.

●   Must be ServSafe certified or willing to become ServSafe certified

●   Spanish proficiency a plus

●   Must have a car, valid driver's license and insurance.

●   Preference given to candidates from communities similar to those we serve.
