Founded initially after September 11th, 2001, the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United) has grown into a national organization with more than 30,000 restaurant worker members in New York, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, Chicago, Michigan, New Orleans, Pennsylvania, Seattle, and Washington, DC. Our mission is to improve wages and working conditions for the nation’s restaurant workforce. Throughout the country, ROC is organizing restaurant workers, employers, and consumers to advance One Fair Wage legislation and ballot measures that will raise wages for restaurant workers and end wage discrimination for tipped workers, who are largely women and disproportionately people of color.

ROC is hiring a Programmatic Associate who will report to ROC United’s Chief of Staff.




  • Assist with daily administrative functions such as scheduling/calendaring, answering emails, as well as coordination of meetings.
  • Provide comprehensive travel arrangement support.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with Chief of Staff for follow through on tasks and assignments, and manage communication between Chief of Staff and internal staff and external partners (i.e., funders, coalition partners).
  • Assist with meeting notes, drafting documents, maintaining files and records, and appropriately archiving program-related information.
  • Prepare Chief of Staff to be presentation-ready for public appearances, speaking gigs, trainings and consultations.

Program Support

  • Independently draft and design visual presentations, using graphics and data visualization tools as needed.
  • Produce professional correspondence, including drafting memos, letters, e-mail templates, meeting agendas and external and internal communication documents. You will be constantly representing the organization in your role.
  • Assist with researching grants, applying for grants/fellowships and coordinating fundraising events as well as communication with institutional funders and donors.
  • Assist with reaching out and engaging financial sponsors in our Capital Campaign for Restore Oakland, a training and advocacy center in Fruitvale, CA
  • Coordinate with high level staff around organization strategy, organizing campaigns and staffing changes.
  • Plan national internal and external convenings.
  • Provide assistance on implementing key organizational programs and campaigns.
  • Assist with training and staff management with Chief of Staff as well as facilitate meetings between multiple staff and external partners.


  • Conduct research to assist with the ROC CA statewide campaign and related OFW campaigns.
  • Support the Research Department as needed, with discrete research tasks to support the Chief of Staff’s speaking and press engagements.



  • Superior and continual attention to detail and follow up. This job requires ability to manage large amounts of correspondence, information and expectations to help Chief of Staff function smoothly
  • Ability to multitask and handle competing demands; prioritize and manage focus and productivity effectively; ability to manage time and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong initiative, creativity and innovation without continuous supervision
  • Excellent research, writing, editing and proofing skills
  • Ability to be discreet and judicious with non-routine and private information
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle time-sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, patience, and diplomacy
  • Superior organizational skills, and the ability to iteratively create, implement, and maintain systems to improve the efficiency of the office
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Familiarity with and commitment to racial, social, and economic justice and a willingness to work collaboratively with persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, ages, and sexual orientations


  • Restaurant experience is a plus
  • Organizing experience is a plus
  • Graphic design, data visualization and presentation support skills is a plus
