SeniorLAW Center seeks a full-time Legal Advocate, with a Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate. Experience in a legal services office and in aging and/or poverty law, working with senior citizens, minority, low-income and/or Limited English Proficient communities are all important foundations for this position, based in Center City Philadelphia. The candidate must possess good interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to work as part of a team, ability to meet deadlines, and good writing and research skills. Those with VOCA-approved victim services training will be preferred. The advocate will be responsible for assisting and advocating on behalf of older victims of elder abuse and/or financial exploitation in various areas of civil law. Reports to: Director, Victim Services and Assistant Director, Victim Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Client representation

1. Interview clients in person and via helpline (telephone intake line) to assess issues and determine eligibility for program services. Obtain relevant demographic and other information from victims of abuse and exploitation through SeniorLAW Center’s telephone intake line, at its center city offices and at community legal clinics in multiple Philadelphia neighborhoods in order to assist Elder Victim Staff Attorney with emergency justice related legal assistance. Utilize Language Line or other interpretation services when needed for LEP seniors.

2. Assess the safety of the victim and provide safety planning, which may include caregiving needs, meal service, temporary housing for safety, etc.

3. Provide immediate support to victims, linking them to other resources and support services, including emergency financial assistance, support groups, lock changes and other resources.

4. Provide information about the criminal justice process and link victims to the elder victim/witness advocate at the District Attorney’s office. Coordinate to ensure interpretation services, court accompaniment and transportation are set up.

5. Provide victims with a copy of their rights.

6. Where required, assist victim in completing victim impact statement to give to District Attorney’s office.

7. Assist elder victims with preparation of and submission of Victim Compensation Claims.

8. Update written materials to serve the limited English population.

9. Complete required paperwork/case management software records on all cases and referrals.

Community Education

1. Assist Elder Victim Staff Attorney in presenting legal education workshops to senior citizens to prevent victimization, identify victims and promote self-identification, and provide or refer them to needed services.

2. Plan, organize and carry out special outreach and tabling events.

3. Work with Elder Victim Staff Attorney and Victims Services Coordinator to update website, E-News and other communication tools.
