Context: Harlem Academy is an Independent school (Grades 1 – 8) where the highest standards for academic rigor and character inspire lifelong learning, thoughtful citizenship, and upward mobility. The school offers merit-based admissions, cultivates strong family partnerships, and ensures its economic diversity by meeting all demonstrated need for tuition support. Please visit for more information.

Mindfulness Meditation program Overview: The School introduced a meditation program in the fall of 2017 for all students. This research-based, secular practice is used as a tool to help students develop mindfulness skills, improve mental and physical health, promote pro-social behavior, and create a classroom environment conducive to learning and personal growth. The program was developed with input from Dr. Joshua Aronson and Suzanne Duran Crelin from NYU's Mindful Education Lab whose team conducted staff training over the summer. Students in all grades practice guided meditation daily during a designated period, and are encouraged to use it as a tool to manage stress throughout their daily lives. Classroom teachers lead these sessions with support from guided meditation resources.

Job Summary: Harlem Academy is seeking a Meditation Specialist to observe and provide guidance at both the administrative and classroom levels. After successful initial implementation of the program, we are interested in fostering continued growth to ensure that teachers are well equipped to lead meditation and students continue to benefit from their daily practice.

This is a part-time role consisting of 2-4 hours each week. The Specialist would complete an on-site observation twice each week, sitting in on one lower school and one middle school session during each visit. Feedback and program development would occur through in-person meetings and written communication. The Specialist is also expected to lead some mediation sessions, modeling strategies for teachers and working directly with the students. The Specialist reports to the Operations Director for arrangement of site visits and other meetings, and works closely with Division Directors in the feedback process.
