JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Summary/Objective

East Side House Settlement is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities. We are seeking a dynamic, hard-working and creative leader who shares our passion for providing exceptional programming to children and families in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx.

The Social Worker is hired by East Side House Settlement and ReadNYC. ReadNYC is United Way of New York City’s (UWNYC) campaign for grade-level reading. ReadNYC and East Side House Settlement offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by UWNYC’s Collective Impact approach. This initiative connects NYC families to schools, community organizations, health care providers, government agencies and more, under a common vision to ensure educational success for our city’s children.

The Social Worker is integral to ReadNYC and East Side House’s strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of the schools and families. The Social Worker will assist the schools in being better equipped to serve the needs of families so that students are ready and able to learn and lead. The social worker will also focus on providing guidance for ReadNYC families to support self-sufficiency, goal setting, as well as increase parent engagement and participation within the schools and community.

Under the supervision of the Director of Family and Community Engagement, the Social Worker, functions as a collaborative member of the ReadNYC team, will provide Social Emotional and Developmental Health (SEDH) support to students and families in ways that complement existing school, CBO resources, and contribute to the ability of a student to experience academic success. This direct service component will accelerate student and family achievement by connecting students and their families with services that meet their most immediate needs.


The Social Worker will work alongside the ReadNYC team and closely within the New York City public education system with elementary school leaders, program coordinators and teachers to identify those students and families need of SEDH support or intervention. Based on the data shared by school leaders and staff, the Social Worker will develop a plan that will include some of the following strategies:


Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

1.   Promote the vision and direction of the local Campaign for grade level reading in alignment with East Side House Settlement’s mission.

2.   Help increase parent engagement and participation within the ReadNYC schools, including the Mott Haven Parent Collective.

3.   Conduct an affirming, motivational family assessment that will serve to excite families about the possibility of support and creation of intervention plan, focus on family goals setting in order to prevent and address chronic absenteeism.

4.   Participate in attendance team meetings to understand the needs and issues faced by the students and families.

5.   Conduct initial interview with student/family for intake and assess student/family needs and strengths, including triggers for attendance issues.

6.   Provide short-term supportive counseling to children and families as necessary: Make in-depth assessment using various age appropriate assessment tools. Assessment will include home visit and input from school and after-school program personnel. The thorough assessment will identify psycho social factors causing stress to student and her/his family. Based on this assessment, an intervention plan will be created.

7.   implement intervention plan which include play therapy, behavior modification techniques, family counseling, referrals, home visits, advocacy visits, case management, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, parenting skills workshops.

8.   Consult with parents as needed to build upon their strengths, needs, challenges and develop a plan that will help them identify and address family’s need.

9.   Refer students and families to local community mental health agencies for psycho educational assessments, case therapeutic treatment, and/or diagnosis management, etc. as necessary

10. Refer students and families to other agencies that will support their identified interests and needs (i.e. housing, food, dental)

11. Document progress and share progress with each of the stakeholders who are involved in the child’s SEDH and academic development.

12. Participate in assigned staff development trainings

13. Provide other program support functions as required.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Master’s in Social Work (MSW) with experience working with children and families in school settings
  •  Experience working within public schools’ systems, preference given to candidates with experience with the New York City Department of Education
  •  Minimum 2 -3 years of post-master’s professional work
  • Knowledge of the network of social services available to parents and families in New York
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  •  Ability to engage, build relationships, and demonstrate empathy with children and families
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and responsibilities
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively with staff members
  •  Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure
  • Diverse cultural competence required
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Word and Excel, email correspondence, and database management a requisite

 Required Clearance

  •  Physical examination to show that the individual is free from all communicable diseases.
  • Clearance from Department of Investigation (DOI).
  • Clearance from the Statewide Central Register (SCR).

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may supervise assigned personnel, including front line staff and/or support staff.


Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines


Travel

Occasional travel is expected for this position.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, bend and lift without restrictions or assistance, lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.


Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. Work days/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs.
