About the Role
The Director of Global Community will build the most skilled and diverse pro bono data science and AI community in the world, creating systems and strategies so they make the greatest impact possible. The Director of Global Community will build a pipeline of top data science volunteers for our long-term and short-term projects. They will also serve as the “voice of the customer,” advocating for our volunteers, building resources and best practices to ensure volunteers have a great experience overall working with DataKind.
The Director of Global Community will be managed by our Chief Operating Officer and will directly supervise our Network Portfolio Manager, and Global Community Associate. This position will also oversee and support our primarily volunteer-led chapters in San Francisco, Singapore, Bangalore, the UK and Washington, D.C.
What You’ll Do
Global Community Strategy and Design:
- Evolve our community network model to most effectively advance our mission, scale our impact, and allow others to replicate what we have built.
- Develop a strategic roadmap and investment plan for each of our three key community constituents: our network of DataKind Chapters and their leaders, the pool of individual volunteers who work on projects, and those “inspired by DataKind” who wish to replicate our model.
- Determine the right strategic "package" of operational support that DataKind will provide to each of its community members, including technology systems and communication tools for projects, Salesforce solutions for reporting metrics, and building a library of resources and best practices to support our community.
- Build an understanding of what is working and what is not and set priorities for the most important gaps and opportunities to improve volunteer experience at DataKind.
Volunteer Recruitment and Retention:
- Recruit professional data scientists, coders, AI experts, project managers, designers and others to volunteer with DataKind.
- Maintain an active and diverse pool of volunteers with the required mix of skills and geographies to staff projects.
- Develop community building and engagement strategies and oversee a team to organize recruitment events, happy hours, Meetups etc.
- Develop a systematic program to surprise and delight DataKind volunteers, engendering deep loyalty and repeat engagements.
- Gather regular feedback and input from volunteers to anticipate their needs, expectations, and desires during each part of the customer journey.
- Shape and instill a common customer service philosophy across staff.
- Create data systems and processes for tracking volunteer data, engagement, and performance across the network.
Chapter Operations, Governance, and Support:
- Support Chapter Leaders in managing their operations, understanding our systems and processes, and setting expectations for performance.
- Oversee and ensure the operational support committed to the Chapters is delivered efficiently and supports their project delivery.
- Ensure all Chapters operate under the fiscal, risk and compliance standards set forth by our Operations Team.
- Plan and host an annual Chapter summit convening the Chapter Leaders from across the globe.
- Develop the process and protocols for sharing information, learnings and best practices across our Network and work with the Product team to ensure these learnings are incorporated back into DataKind’s methodology.
- Collect and interpret data about each chapter's volunteer quality, project output and impact and cost of operations to help optimize the the chapter model.
Who You Are
- An experienced, collaborative manager: You have experience managing teams in either the volunteer, nonprofit or tech spaces (or perhaps all three). You’re comfortable taking complex problems down to bite-sized deliverables and you are exceptional at keeping teams on task to deliver great work on time. You identify problems early and are proactive about working with colleagues to create solutions. You know you don’t have all the answers so will recruit and motivate a team of staff and volunteers with complementary skills.
- A systems thinker and people person: You love chatting with people just as much as you love creating process and systems to help them do their best work. People want to work for you. You are used to leading a team, but also don’t mind rolling up your sleeves to get in the weeds when necessary. You are a natural at building rapport and have a knack for relationship management.
- Customer advocate: You’ll dig into who our volunteers are and advocate for their needs, ensuring they have a great experience with DataKind.
- A cross-cultural thinker: You make no assumptions and meet people where they are. You’re accustomed to working with a global team of professionals who all bring their unique experience and perspective to the job. You’ve lived or worked outside the U.S. and bring a global mindset to each problem you’re trying to solve.
- An impact-driven professional: You are committed to building a career and leveraging your expertise in a space that marries the rigor of the private sector, the responsibility of the public sector, and the passion of the nonprofit sector.
- 10+ years of experience managing global networks of stakeholders. That could be volunteer chapters, store branches, or even a virtual community of open source contributors, etc.
- Can design a strategy aligned with company goals and manage and execute the tactics necessary to deliver on that strategy.
- Ability to manage multiple complex and competing priorities without express authority over delivery teams and extensive experience managing volunteer teams towards specific goals.
- Successfully and regularly manages multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Continuous improvement expertise - someone who has experience analyzing the objective data that emerges from a process or organization and can alter and improve a process to better achieve organizational goals.
- Brings a deep understanding of the data for good landscape, its players, and where DataKind fits in the ecosystem.
- Flexibility to work on nights or weekends in order to collaborate with volunteer teams and global chapters in different time zones.
