It is well documented that green spaces provide innumerable health benefits – both mental and physical and with the onset of COVID-19, community gardens and access to open spaces have proven to be an essential part of our city’s infrastructure. Together with partners in city agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities, NYRP demonstrates the social and environmental value of building ownership over open spaces.

Position Summary

NYRP is seeking a Junior Seasonal Engagement Assistant to work closely with the Community Engagement team. The position supports the strengthening of NYRP’s commitment to empowering communities while also providing an opportunity to gain an array of experiences and transferable skills to your resume. The Junior Engagement Assistant will work on building the capacity of community garden groups through the provision of information, community organizing, troubleshooting, and brainstorming. As a part of the Community Engagement team, the Seasonal Assistant will also work with other members of the Engagement and Programming Department and NYRP’s Operations departments.  

To be successful in this role, a candidate must have strong communication skills, experience living or working in focus neighborhoods, and the ability to work a flexible schedule, including some weekend and evenings, while working remotely and in the field (abiding by NYRP COVID policies). The right candidate will be interested in community outreach and environmental justice, food security, asset, and resource mapping. The term of service is from April to October 2019.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

·        Working from April to October 2021; 30 hours per week

·        Attend and participate in monthly garden group meetings (either remotely or in person, supporting facilitation, troubleshooting, taking notes, data entry, etc.)

·        Working with garden groups and Community Engagement to increase community participation

·        Tracking and reporting community activities in and around NYRP gardens

·        Coordination on local asset mapping (partners and local stakeholders)

·        Assisting with updating NYRP’s Database

·        Identifying new regional opportunities for NYRP programs and services

·        Participating and supporting regional activities which may include resource, prepared food, or produce distribution

Qualifications

·        High school diploma or equivalent required with flexibility for higher education (some college, current college or graduate students are welcome to apply)

·        3-5 years’ experience of working with community members either through organizing, advocacy, food security, environmental justice

·        Proven ability to manage multiple projects while working under deadlines in a fast-paced environment

·        Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and written, internally and externally

·        Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and eagerness to learn

·        Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)

·        Ability to multi-task and problem solve with attention to details

·        Experience and comfort working with community members

·        Spanish speaking preferred
