The Story Collider, an acclaimed, NYC -based arts and science storytelling organization, is seeking applicants for a newly established Managing Director position. The Managing Director, who will report to the Executive Director, will oversee the organization’s finance, operations, and fundraising administration. The Story Collider’s part-time Operations Manager will support the work of and report to the Managing Director, as will the organization’s outside bookkeeper.

With an annual budget of approximately $650,000 per year, The Story Collider finds, develops, and shares true personal stories about science, with the goal of revealing the human experience behind science and showing that it’s a vibrant part of our lives. As of March 2020, The Story Collider had a regular presence in 14 cities on three continents, in addition to its renowned weekly podcast series and science communication trainings offered throughout the world. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Story Collider live shows have been offered online and the organization has launched its first public storytelling workshops. In addition to its goal to enhance public connections to science and scientists, The Story Collider is dedicated to amplifying the voices of peoples who have been historically unrepresented in the field of science and in the halls of science academia. 

The Story Collider recently announced that its Board of Directors has appointed longtime Artistic Director Erin Barker Executive Director, effective July 1, 2021. Barker’s portfolio will continue to include artistic leadership of the organization, and the team will expand to include its first Managing Director. In addition, the Board has created the new part-time position of Story Collider Science Advisory Fellow to bring a dedicated science seat back to the executive team of the organization. The staff also includes a full-time Deputy Director and a part-time Operations Manager. In addition to these 5 staff positions and our part-time bookkeeper, The Story Collider works regularly with a team of approximately 40 producers and educators. 

The Managing Director role is intended to be a full-time or near full-time position, and the regular hours of work are somewhat flexible. While the Managing Director will ideally be based in the New York metropolitan region, the Managing Director will work remotely as is the case for all Story Collider staff.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Managing Director will oversee and implement the infrastructure and systems needed to support The Story Collider´s strategic objectives, including the following:

  1.  Serve as Finance Director, including the review and approval of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for the Executive Director and the Board. Oversee budgeting, financial forecasting, cash flow and coordination of audit or independent review activities as well as accounts payable and receivable.  
  2. Provide key support for fundraising and other revenue generating activities: Prepare and submit grant proposals; manage fundraising reporting requirements; develop and ensure execution of annual plan for outreach to and solicitation of individual donors; co-lead planning and execution of fundraising events. Support and oversee contractual relationships with clients, that generates earned revenue.
  3. Legal Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with legal requirements such as annual filings; oversee risk management, including ensuring adequate insurance coverage is in place.
  4. Contracts: Oversee Contract Negotiation and Administration.
  5. IT and Data Management: Serve as point person on Information Technology and file management.
  6. HR Administration: Oversee administration of HR, including robust systems for recruitment, performance feedback, team development activities, professional development, periodic updating of employee handbook, and compliance. Serve as liaison to the Board’s HR Committee.
  7. Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise Operations Manager and oversee work of outside bookkeeper.
  8. Strategic Planning: Support Executive/ Artistic Director’s development of Strategic Plans.
  9. Board: Oversee administration of Board activities, including Board and Committee meeting scheduling, materials development and dissemination, conflict of interest statements and general communications. Serve as staff liaison to applicable Board Committees, including HR and Finance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

--A Bachelor’s Degree or higher

--5+ years of non-profit finance and operations experience, at a mid- or senior level, including HR, Compliance and Contracts, IT and Data Management

--Familiarity with and strong interest in grant writing and administration, as well as corporate and individual fundraising support

--Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including 3+ years supervisory experience

Salary range is $75,000 to $80,000, depending on experience, plus benefits including generous paid time off policy and support for health insurance premiums or expenses.
