Founded in 2012, Ballet Five Eight NFP (Ballet 5:8) is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging communities in Chicago, the Midwest and the nation in conversation of life and faith through innovative storytelling and breathtaking dance (ballet58.org). Ballet 5:8 communications facilitate ongoing relationships with multiple constituent groups across the faith-based organization’s programs and supporters, including relating to the professional performance company and to Ballet 5:8’s dance education programs. 

Ballet 5:8 is seeking a Communications Director for a uniquely challenging role. We exist at the rare intersection of demanding excellence and deep faith. Our Communications Director must be capable of communicating faith in the public sphere in a winsome manner, making a case for the arts in Christian circles, and continuing to establish Ballet 5:8 performances and dance education programs as an indispensable part of the Chicago South Suburbs. We maintain dozens of channels of communication, including social media, email, multiple websites, direct mail, public speaking and radio advertisements. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize each element of the communication ecosystem to represent the vision of Ballet 5:8.

The job requires an attention to details with copywriting, scheduling and management, as well as a vision to move the communication strategy to a new level of engagement and clarity.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director is responsible to understand Ballet 5:8’s mission, vision, values and activities and articulate them through outstanding communications. The Communications Director develops strategy and manages implementation for all Ballet 5:8 communications, including websites, social media, email, donor relations, public relations, and marketing. The Communications Director is a visionary with the ability to implement well-defined marketing plans to grow and engage Ballet 5:8’s audiences, donors, and participants in dance education programs. The Communications Director furthers Ballet 5:8’s mission by accurately representing Ballet 5:8 to the public, cultivating strong relationships with donors and constituents, and connecting Ballet 5:8 with individuals and communities who benefit from Ballet 5:8 work. 

The Communications Director works with input from the Artistic Director to effectively understand and represent Ballet 5:8’s artistic mission, repertoire and programming; collaborates with the Studio Manager and Ballet 5:8 NOW Coordinator on communications strategy for Ballet 5:8 education programs; and manages the Media & Marketing Team including Social Media associates and the Media Coordinator. 

Responsibilities

The Communications Director is responsible for communications across all stakeholder groups including audience members, donors, dance education participants, and the Orland Park and  Chicagoland communities. 

At a High Level

  • Oversee the ongoing implementation of Ballet 5:8’s brand through clear, professional and consistent communications. 
  • Accurately represent Ballet 5:8’s mission, values and programs. 
  • Pursue excellence and foster a culture of excellence for God’s glory throughout the Communications Department. 

Planning and Management

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the interconnected communications, marketing, and media plans pertaining to Ballet 5:8’s programs, events and stakeholders. 
  • Manage marketing budgets.
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities. 
  • Monitor and manage applicable data such as website performance, audience and enrollment goals, and feedback surveys. 
  • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. 
  • Mentor and develop Media & Marketing Team staff using a supportive and collaborative approach; promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement and a commitment to quality.

Print and Digital Assets

  • Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy intended for public consumption to ensure alignment with communications plans and Ballet 5:8 brand and mission. 
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, emails, marketing materials and websites.
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.

Community Relationships

  • Ensure Ballet 5:8 stakeholders remain informed about and engaged with Ballet 5:8’s work, facilitating dialog and deepening relationships. 
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of Ballet 5:8 programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.


Qualifications

Ballet 5:8 is seeking an individual who resonates with Ballet 5:8’s mission, has arts/culture sector experience, and who has at least 3-5 years of communications experience, ideally covering areas such as copywriting, website content, newsletters, marketing, and donor communications. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.

Specific requirements include:
  • Knowledge of or experience in classical ballet and/or performing arts
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience 
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating communications strategies
  • Experience managing a team of subordinates 
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  • Relationship builder
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively
  • A growing and deepening Christian faith and a commitment to advancing the cause of Christ

Additional Information

This is a full time position with 40-45 working hours per week at Ballet 5:8’s main studios in Orland Park, IL. The majority of working hours are during Monday-Friday business hours, with occasional meetings and events on evenings and weekends. 

Salary range is $30-$39k. Benefits include paid vacation plus eight paid holidays per calendar year, partial scheduling flexibility, and the option to enroll in free dance education classes (including for immediate family members). Ballet 5:8 staff members enjoy the convenience and cost effectiveness of suburban living while being within an easy drive or train ride to downtown Chicago.
