Science Program Manager


San Diego Coastkeeper, a non-profit organization working to protect and restore fishable, swimmable, drinkable water in San Diego County, seeks an energetic, self-motivated individual to fill the role of science program manager. 


This unique role is a full-time, temporary 18-month position responsible for leading the development and implementation of a robust new science program within San Diego Coastkeeper. The science program manager is responsible for: 


  1. Researching, designing, securing funding for, and implementing a new science program that meets environmental needs and furthers Coastkeeper’s mission and vision 
  2. Managing the current science monitoring, mapping, and advisory needs of the organization
  3. Communicating science activities, policies, and positions to the public


The new science program will encompass actions, activities, or strategies to aid San Diego Coastkeeper in accomplishing its overall mission and may be designed around such efforts as water quality monitoring and assessment, habitat restoration, citizen science activities, watershed health enhancement, and/or efforts to support climate adaptation and resilience, among others. 


This is an excellent opportunity for a curious, passionate, outcomes-driven person looking to lead the creation and implementation of a robust science program at one of San Diego’s most well-respected environmental advocacy and education organizations. Successful candidates will have a strong environmental science background, have demonstrated experience securing funding for programs and/or projects, and have excellent science communication skills. The position will accept applications on a rolling basis, and will remain open until filled. The science program manager works closely with the development manager, programs director, and executive director. This position reports to the programs director. 


Responsibilities:


The following is a breakdown of the initial approximate percentage weights of the responsibilities of this role. The proportion of time spent on these responsibilities may shift as the science program gets established, and will be contingent on the nature of that program itself.


Science Program Development (70%)

  • Identify areas of environmental need within the community that align with Coastkeeper’s mission and could be met with robust scientific support
  • Research and design impactful science-based projects or programs that are aligned with and integrated into the organization’s strategic plan priorities 
  • Work with development manager and programs director to research, vet, pursue, and secure funding opportunities to support new science program components 
  • Conduct regular reporting to Coastkeeper development and programs staff on current and upcoming science program funding opportunities
  • Generate science program proposal content for use in grant applications and donor communications
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and potential science program partners, donors, and potential funders
  • Attend relevant meetings, trainings, and seminars, as needed


Science and Technical Support to Existing Programs (30%)

  • Support Coastkeeper’s advocacy team with technical document review and interpretation, water quality monitoring, and potential GIS work and environmental policy development support
  • Support Coastkeeper’s community outreach program through the development of data visualization projects and science communication support
  • Support Coastkeeper’s education team with occasional science curriculum development consultation and student monitoring project design
  • Create and update science content for organizational website and communications


Required Qualifications:


  • A degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or related field
  • Experience with environmental monitoring and assessment, habitat restoration, or other environmental program or project implementation
  • Demonstrated experience with successful grant writing, fundraising, and program design 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and energetically about scientific and technical topics


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience designing monitoring, restoration, climate resilience, and/or citizen science programs
  • Experience seeking and obtaining funding for science-based work and programs  
  • Experience working with and managing volunteers
  • Demonstrated passion for environmental protection, and an interest in water issues in particular
  • Familiarity with the Clean Water Act
  • Proficiency in GIS and data visualization
  • Strong knowledge of current funding trends and good relationships within the San Diego environmental community



Salary, Benefits, & Terms:


Schedule - Full-time, temporary; 40 hours per week with varying hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. This is an 18-month position starting at the date of hire, with opportunities for a permanent position contingent on acquisition of adequate funding. This position is based in San Diego Coastkeeper’s Point Loma office, with meetings, site visits, and occasional presentations throughout the county.

Compensation - $56,000 - $63,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
