We are seeking a team-oriented leader to join HCZ’s Finance Department and help it carry out its responsibility for managing a $120 million annual operating budget and substantial endowment. Under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for revenue accounting, grant and cost center financial reporting, and managing the general accounting team. This individual will also take the lead in managing the annual audits. This is a high profile role that works closely with senior management as a strategic thought partner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Controller in leading the accounting team
  • Manage and mentor multiple direct reports
  • Provide consultative, strategic support to Development and senior management to optimize revenues and strengthen external relationships with funders
  • Ensure that all financial activities are accounted for in compliance with all relevant rules and regulations, and proactively stay up to date on changes to regulations
  • Work with the accounting team to prepare month end closing and financial reporting including account analysis and reconciliation
  • Lead and direct the audit and tax filing processes, in partnership with an external audit firm
  • Support the Controller and CFO in continuous improvement and innovation efforts
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or information systems; CPA preferred
  • At least 10 years accounting experience in a large not-for-profit or corporate setting. At least 2 years of direct people management experience
  • Mastery of accounting and regulatory concepts, plus the ability to translate them into strategic decisions
  • Excellent communication skills and team-oriented mindset
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, while keeping stakeholders informed
  • Coaching and talent development
  • Experience working with nonprofit financial systems like Abila MIP and Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus but not required
