Job Title: Lead Teacher, North Lawndale College Prep

Reports To: Program Manager, In-School & Curriculum

Directly Supervises: Production Coordinator

The ideal candidate is someone that maintains focus, perspective, positive attitude, and attention to detail in a fast-paced, creative, project-based, youth-driven environment. The candidate will be committed to creating to a learning-centered, collaborative space for students and their team.


The Lead Teacher will teach a projected four courses per semester at North Lawndale College Prep (NLCP) campuses including Digital Media Level 1, Digital Media Level 2, and Graphic Design. This person will work closely with the entire in-school programming team on lesson planning and shared teaching philosophies. The Lead Teacher is also responsible for organizational partnerships and administration tasks including academic assessment, program evaluation and reporting, and supervising distribution of youth-produced media.


Primary Responsibilities:

●       Develop and implement media production programming (levels introductory to advanced), including writing curriculum, as well as teaching and instructing students on photography, audio and video production graphic design, and documentary filmmaking and researching new practices and contemporary examples of these media forms

●       Supervise and coach Production Coordinator, collaborate and work successfully with students and community partners

●       Create and maintain youth development environment where students receive academic, artistic, social and emotional support

●       Coordinate and maintain existing and cultivate new relationships with local media professionals to serve as guest speakers and mentors

●       Plan, oversee, and attend field trips to media production companies, organizations, and events

●       Assist with planning FSM showcases of youth media from in-school program

●       Work collaboratively with school administration and other service providers to ensure quality classroom instruction and support school partner’s college readiness efforts in program

●       Maintain students’ attendance and grades, participate in parent-teacher conferences, and communicate student successes and challenges with caregivers and school administration

●       Support FSM’s leadership team in evaluation efforts and reporting requirements by assisting in the collection of data and writing reports on in-school programming

●       Participate in FSM and NLCP staff meetings and professional development trainings, as well as support facilitation of these meetings and trainings as needed

●       Perform other duties as assigned, including coordinating with NLCP to support filming of school events per the partnership agreement

●       Identify and support the recruitment of youth to summer programming and internship opportunities based upon skill level and interest

●       Serve as liaison with alumni from NLCP program to share information about media opportunities and FSM events

●       Other duties as assigned


Qualifications & Experience:

●       Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; focus in media arts, education, or youth development preferred

●       ISBE Professional Educator Licensure in relevant content area and/or CTE educator license with stipulations preferred

●       Minimum 3 years experience working with high school aged students in an education or youth development setting; experience as lead classroom teacher in a school setting preferred

●       Experience teaching predominantly African American student population from under-resourced communities

●       Experience working with student populations with different needs, including young people with individualized education plans, behavior-management plans, specialized instructional needs, or chronic exposure to trauma

●       Experience in production of video, film, or television media, as well as post-production tools, such as Final Cut Pro or other non-linear editing software

●       Experience or interest in designing and developing engaging project-based program with youth

●       Strong professional organizational skills and ability to balance tasks; experience with a complex educational partnerships

●       Ability to use effective, engaging, and persuasive speech and writing in instruction, presentations, meetings, and site visits


Work Requirements:

This is a full-time position, starting mid-August. Hours may exceed 40 hours a week with out-of-school time devoted to lesson planning, grading, and parent/student communication. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with education and experience; Range $40,000 - $45,000
