Summary:

The Controller is responsible for the management and supervision of the central accounting function at The Carter Center. Duties include management of all audit and tax reporting, oversight of the payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and monthly close processes, management of policies and procedures documentation, and oversight of space management/facility services.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field, and seven years of related experience, including two years of public accounting. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics and QuickBooks accounting software preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

CPA strongly preferred and experience with Microsoft Dynamics and QuickBooks accounting software.


Key Responsibilities:

External Reporting:

External Audits: Serves as liaison with external auditors. Produces all documents necessary for auditors to complete multiple annual financial audits, including the financial statement audit, the US government audit, and all donor-specific audits.

Tax Filing: Completes all federal/state tax filings within timeframes established by respective agencies. 


Central Accounting Duties:

Treasury: Is the point of contact for all banking relationships. Manages all on-line treasury accounts to ensure that Center treasury needs can be met from an expanding set of resources.

Accounts Payable: Oversees the Accounts Payable function for all payments made out of HQ. This includes the annual 1099 tax reporting process to the IRS.

Accounts Receivable: Oversees the Accounts Receivable function which primarily serves as the processor for donations and grants made to the Center. Provides guidance on appropriate revenue coding as needed.

Payroll Processing:  Supervises the payroll accounting function which includes timecard entry and the proper assignment and allocation of expense to cost centers.

Policies & Procedures: Develops and implements accounting, internal, and quality control procedures related to all financial processes. Awareness of and adherence to state and federal guidelines, where applicable, is required.

Financial Systems: Oversees the daily operation of the HQ financial systems. Contributes to the periodic review and upgrade of systems as required, including an anticipated software migration in the coming year.

Annual Budget Process: Oversees the annual budget process with particular focus on budgeting for HQ operational cost centers. Coordinates the production of all budget books prepared at multiple steps within the process.

Contract Administration: Assists the Contracts Manager, as needed, with the reviews and processing of all agreements with vendors, independent contractors, donors and partners prior to approval and signature. Oversees a database of all agreements signed by Carter Center management.

Facility Services: Supervises the space management and front desk operations function for the Center. Establishes policies and procedures to maintain efficient and timely services and high level of customer service.

Performance Management: Effectively manages employee performance and addresses problems by providing employees with feedback on a regular basis, identifying ways to further develop skills, and completing written evaluations on an annual basis.

Professional Development:  Maintains professional growth by participating in educational programs and professional organizations and activities to maintain a knowledge of national trends and to promote leading edge performance and expertise.

Record-Keeping: Directs document storage and retention by interpreting applicable regulations and establishing filing and auditing procedures to ensure hard copy and electronic files contain complete and accurate documentation.

Special Projects: Manages special projects as assigned to ensure completion within specified timeframe.

Travel:  Occasional domestic travel as required with possible international travel optional.
