Resolve to Save Lives is a data-driven organization. Our two program areas rely on up-to-date research and knowledge to make decisions that guide our program, policy and advocacy efforts. We are seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Principal Science Advisor. The successful candidate will work across our core focus areas: epidemic prevention and cardiovascular health. The Principal Science Advisor’s primary responsibility will be to ensure that RTSL’s work is evidence-based. A major function of the role will be to help translate evidence into public health practice. A primary focus of the role will be to provide technical support and scientific advice to the President & CEO. The role will also support other senior leadership, RTSL teams in China, India, Nigeria and Ethiopia and technical teams across the organization. The successful candidate will work closely with the communications team to ensure that the public messaging and media presence of RTSL are rooted in science and effective. The person in this position will also function as a subject matter expert, lending expert analysis and opinion, as appropriate.

This full-time position is remote. The incumbent will be expected to convene periodically for in-person team meetings and to work during East Coast core working hours. The salary range for this role in the US is $155,000 to $170,000; outside the US, salaries are set according to national labor rates for the international NGO sector. 

Core Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide technical support and scientific advice to the CEO of RTSL
  • Develop and maintain scientific expertise across the subject matter areas on which RTSL works
  • Review existing and emerging scientific literature and provide written summaries, syntheses and expert opinion.
  • Participate in internal calls to discuss the scientific content of and approach to RTSL’s work.
  • Review public health guidelines, materials and tools, summarize content and provide expert analysis
  • Conduct analyses of public health data and interpret and report findings for internal and external use
  • Help draft emails with scientific content to external colleagues and partners
  • Provide scientific support on calls with external partners and the media.
  • Provide support to RTSL senior leadership, country office leadership and programs, and technical teams
  • The duties listed above that will support the CEO will apply here as well.
  • Review and update the health safety protocols for RTSL employees, including those pertaining to domestic and international travel.
  • Support the communications team on effective, evidence-based public health messaging and support the media presence of RTSL.
  • Support the development and honing of effective public health messaging tools and campaigns.
  • Advise the scientific content of social media messaging.
  • Participate in media interviews on scientific/public health aspects of RTSL’s work.
  • Lead the development of written products that disseminate the work, findings and positions of RTSL to various audiences.
  • Lead or contribute to developing and writing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Lead or contribute to the development of public health tools and products relevant to cardiovascular health or preventing epidemics, for use by RTSL and/or collaborating partners
  • Contribute ideas to and provide feedback on opinion pieces that advance the position and work of RTSL.
  • Develop written summaries of emerging and existing public health literature and topics for posting on the RTSL website.

Required Qualifications: 

Academic credentials:

  • Master’s degree in public health and/or in a scientific discipline
  • MD or equivalent preferred

Experience, skills, and attributes:

  • 8+ years of global public health work experience
  • 2+ years of clinical experience after completion of training
  • Ability to rapidly synthesize evidence and communicate findings on complex scientific topics
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including with scientific and public audiences
  • Excellent scientific writing skills and experience writing scientific manuscripts and reports
  • Competency in at least one statistical software package
  • Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Curious and enthusiastic about learning
  • Self-directed and able to thrive in a remote work environment
  • Highly responsive to emails, calls and texts
  • Able to respond quickly to time-sensitive requests
  • Enthusiastic and willing to confidently and constructively share feedback and opinions, including with leaders in their fields

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Subject matter expertise in topics related to global cardiovascular health and/or epidemic prevention and response is preferred
