The Director of Impact Giving will oversee the Principal Gifts department at ADL’s headquarters in New York. He/She will personally build and manage a portfolio of ADL’s top current and prospective donors, working with the CEO, Senior Vice President of Growth, philanthropic engagement and institutional giving teams, and regional offices to cultivate and secure transformational gifts.




  • Design and implement a principal gifts strategy aimed at retaining and securing new, transformational six- and seven-figure gifts to ADL’s annual campaign
  • Drive moves management activity, including supporting solicitation activity, developing proposals, and managing stewardship efforts
  • Build and manage a personal fundraising portfolio of 75-100 principal gifts donors and prospects
  • Set and achieve annual fundraising goals for the portfolio
  • Develop and implement personalized cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Solicit gifts of $100,000 and higher from current and prospective donors, leveraging staff and lay leadership as appropriate
  • Work with the CEO, Senior Vice President of Growth, and Senior Director of Philanthropic Engagement to create comprehensive stewardship plans for all principal gifts donors
  • Support capital campaign activity and participate in select strategy meetings  
  • Support the CEO, Senior Vice President of Growth, and other senior leadership in managing key relationships with principal gifts donors and prospective donors
  • Partner with Regional Directors and Regional Development Directors to build and expand a strong principal gifts pipeline
  • Coordinate with regions and the philanthropic engagement team on high-level donor activity, including stewardship and solicitation strategies and regional visits from executive leadership
  • Engage and collaborate with all departments across ADL on strategies for principal gift opportunities
  • Oversee the Principal Gifts Officers and Prospect Researcher to advance fundraising activity and ensure goals and objectives are met
  • Oversee Principal Gifts Officers to ensure the strategic cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of annual donors at key giving levels
  • Oversee the Prospect Researcher in managing a comprehensive prospect research, qualification, and assignment system
  •  Utilize Salesforce to maintain accurate records of all donor interactions, individuals’ programmatic interests, and strategies for donor engagement and solicitation
  • Collaborate with the development team in the pursuit of fundraising excellence and partner with colleagues across the organization to achieve ADL’s overall fundraising goals
  •  Other tasks and duties reasonably related to job responsibilities



Direct supervision of principal gift officers and prospect researcher(s). Some staff members may work remotely.





  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information to donors, board members, and staff
  • Highly organized with the ability to lead in a complex, fast-moving environment; a driving force who manages toward clarity and solutions
  • Experience leading a team, providing strategic direction and delivering results
  • A self-motivated team player with an energetic, flexible, and creative approach
  • Sound judgment and sensitivity to highly confidential information
  • Excellent communication and coalition-building skills with an ability to balance, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Technical competence required. Working familiarity and comfort in database systems, reporting, and analysis essential. Reasonable level of experience using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and comfort learning new technology.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of senior development experience in a sophisticated fundraising organization with significant experience cultivating and soliciting major gifts
  • A high level of knowledge and understanding of fundraising best practices and the philanthropic landscape



  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Advanced Degree preferred
