Description

The Public Policy Associate is primarily responsible for state legislative and executive branch

advocacy but also engages with administrative agencies, house delegations, and builds and maintains relationships

with local legislators in Virginia as well as coalitions and local influentials. They will be a primary liaison between

the Advocacy team of the ACLU of VA and the state legislature both in and out of session. The Advocacy team of the

ACLU of Virginia will be focusing on crafting and executing an effective legislative strategy, and running two multiyear

advocacy campaigns centering around voting rights and prosecutorial reform. This role will help create a

legislative agenda, find patrons, and build coalitions to support the legislative side of our advocacy work. Based in

Richmond, the Public Policy Associate reports directly to the Director of Advocacy and works closely with other

members of the organization’s 17-person staff in implementing our action plan and achieving our strategic goals.

The ideal candidate will have experience lobbying or working in the Virginia state legislature for 1-2 sessions and

has a strong desire to increase their network and build lasting relationships with local elected leaders, coalitions,

and other influencers from both sides of the aisle. A background in organizing for ballot measures or legislative

organizing that engaged both parties is strongly preferred. They should have strong execution skills and be adept

at active listening. The ideal candidate should be comfortable speaking in public in both planned and

extemporaneous settings
