PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: To develop and implement the Alliance to End Hunger’s coalition and legislative strategies to increase access to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

1. Leads a broad coalition that includes healthcare companies, insurance providers, hunger and nutrition organizations, and other stakeholders in support of WIC.

2. Implements a coordinated advocacy effort to support appropriations and authorization of child nutrition programs, with a special focus on WIC.

3. Represents the Alliance at coalition meetings and builds consensus in support of improvements to WIC as part of the ongoing COVID-19 response and child nutrition reauthorization process.

4. Collaborates with Alliance members and other partners to engage the Administration and congressional stakeholders on key policy proposals to improve WIC.

5. Supports Alliance’s communication efforts to tell the story of WIC with key partners on Capitol Hill, the administration, and media.

6. Plans and coordinates Alliance to End Hunger Capitol Hill advocacy days, with a specific focus on WIC.

7. Researches and analyzes issues and develops policy regarding improved access to WIC and other maternal and child nutrition programs.

8. Prepares and delivers presentations and materials for a variety of audiences including advocacy, research, website, and policy documents as needed.

9. Increases engagement and advocacy in WIC among Alliance’s Hunger-Free Communities Network.

10. Completes administrative requirements such as regular reporting, data management, timesheets, corporate credit card reports in an accurate and timely manner.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

Participates in Alliance staff meetings and annual work planning.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Bachelor’s Degree in public policy or related area preferred or the equivalent of four years’ relevant work experience

• Two years of relevant work experience including Hill or lobbying experience

• Detailed knowledge of U.S. food and nutrition programs affecting vulnerable communities, specifically women and children.

• Demonstrated an ability to create positive collaborative relationships with external target organizations; lead internal and external teams which require a high degree of diplomacy and judgment to address and resolve substantive conflicts or escalate concerns to executive leadership.

• Strong written and oral communication skills, including ability to identify and engage target audiences and communicate complex ideas or issues tailored to the audience, using appropriate formats and media.

• Strong public speaking skills, experience leading workshops and/or multi-stakeholder discussions required. Experience in utilizing and managing online communications tools, such as blogs and social networking sites.

• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, including ability to conduct research and in-depth analysis of complex factors related to organizational issues and to make data-driven recommendations and decisions

• Experience working with diverse groups, including ability to reach across racial, ethnic, generational, socioeconomic, rural/urban and religious lines

• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, Internet searches, and constituent databases.

WORK ENVIRONMENT ISSUES:

Attendance at various lobby visits on the Hill and other meetings in Washington, DC will frequently be required.
