Organization Summary: The mission of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation - New York (IHDF-NY) is to motivate and empower children living in low-income communities to reach their educational and career potential by providing a long-term program of academic support, mentoring, enrichment and tuition assistance for higher education. We believe that by helping our Dreamers gain access to college, we are putting them on a different academic and life trajectory, while having a broader impact on the students' families and the generations that follow.
Level of Work: 20 hours per week – Monday to Friday: 1:30-6:00 pm
Weekly hours subject to flexibility based on program needs, some Saturdays as needed
Location: “I Have A Dream” Foundation-NY: East Harlem Program (PS 7: 120th Street between 3rd Ave. & Lexington Ave.)
Job Description: The After School Instructor will help oversee the after school activities at the IHDF–NY: East Harlem Program, and directly instruct and supervise 5th-8th grade Dreamers in small and large group activities. The After School instructor will support the program’s strategic goals for Dreamer high program attendance and ensuring that Dreamers achieve academic grade levels or above.
Responsibilities/Description: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: After School Instruction:
• Lead a group of 10-12 Dreamers in the After School
• Provide small group instruction in Literacy and Math and/or provide tutoring to high need Dreamers; support general tutoring efforts for Dreamers
• Implement classroom management strategies as instructed, using Love and Logic; serve as leader to assigned volunteers
•Support Dreamers with homework • Assist with transition from school day to the after-school (set up/clean up, pick up, snacks, bathroom, etc.) • Assist and actively participate in all enrichment activities including physical fitness, wellness, music, dance, theater, and arts • Lead small “Choice Time” group play activity
• Attend required trainings, daily preparations and debriefings; provide regular updates on Dreamer performance
• All other relevant duties as assigned by the Program Director/Assistant Director.
Additional Expectations and Requirements: • Must have experience in after school or summer programs/ Middle School experience a strong plus • Must have teaching or tutoring experience in reading and math - Strong proficiency in middle grades reading, writing and math • Be a role model to all Dreamers • Knowledge of Love and Logic is a plus. • Follow program policies and procedures • Possess good listening skills • Have a positive attitude under pressure • Remain collaborative and caring in communication with other staff members and all Dreamers • High-energy, positive, flexibile • Fill in as needed when other staff is absent • Possess strong interpersonal and administrative skills • Spanish speaking is a plus
Compensation: $ 16.00 per hour - No benefits
