Description

Syria Direct is now hiring a Managing Director:

Syria Direct is seeking an experienced manager to help lead our team of Syrian and international reporters based in Amman, Jordan in our mission to produce non-biased, investigative news coverage of the conflict in Syria.

Position Description:

The Managing Director will be responsible for all managerial functions of the organization, including the hiring of staff, partnership development, donor relations, development of a multi-year strategic growth plan, fundraising efforts and the management of the annual budget. The Managing Director will report to Syria Direct’s Executive Director and will also work alongside Syria Direct’s Editor-in-Chief to chart the organization’s journalistic direction.

In addition to leading a diverse, bilingual team of Syrian and international journalists, the Managing Director will also oversee the program manager. The two will work to facilitate Syria Direct’s programmatic agenda, including identifying and applying for potential grants, managing pre- and post-project reporting, corresponding directly with ongoing and prospective donors and exploring potential avenues for new, strategic partnerships.

This position is ideal for an ambitious, mid-career professional with at least three to five years of experience and an interest in international non-profit management.

Candidates must have fluent English proficiency, and professional proficiency in Arabic is strongly preferred. Candidates should also have experience working in either program or grants management, ideally in an international non-profit organization. The Managing Director must have excellent writing and research skills as well as previous professional leadership experience in order to manage a diverse, midsized and fast-paced newsroom.

While candidates are not expected to have a granular understanding of the Syrian conflict, we do expect the Managing Director to start with a well-informed sense of the history and nature of the conflict (e.g. timeline, critical events and major actors, etc.). The Managing Director must be able to present to donors and partners on the rapidly changing dynamics in Syria on a weekly basis, and ultimately articulate a clear and comprehensive organizational strategy for the future of reporting on the conflict.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have the ability to work across cultures in a diverse and bilingual office;
  • Be able to manage teams as well as set and meet time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Possess excellent writing, research and communication skills;
  • Be proactive, creative and enjoy working in a fast-paced and tight-knit office.

Syria Direct offers a competitive salary and an opportunity to join a successful and growing media start-up.
