Reporting to the Managing Director of Development and External Affairs, the Manager of Media Relations will lead WPA’s media efforts, building on existing strategy and finding new opportunities to highlight WPA’s unique mission in earned media placements. The ideal candidate is a creative self-starter with experience crafting compelling narratives in partnership with individuals with lived experience. 

Responsibilities:

  • With the Managing Director of Development and External Affairs, develop, implement, and manage a public relations and media plan for the organization.
  • Respond to incoming media inquiries and proactively pitch stories related to WPA’s mission and strategic priorities.  
  • In collaboration with Program team, oversee the Women’s Leadership and Media Project, including curriculum development, participant recruitment, guest speaker recruitment and cultivation, class facilitation, field trip research and partnership, budget management, graduation ceremony planning, and the development of stories for the purpose of paid media opportunities that elevate the WPA brand and expand the skills and capacities of participants.
  • Cultivate relationships and work closely with reporters, journalists, producers, and editors to ensure WPA has a prominent media presence around the country and is highly visible on key issues of importance to the organization.
  • Create media-related materials, including press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, media advisories, and more with short notice and on tight deadlines.
  • Collaborate with Development team to create consistent and compelling content across WPA’s external communication channels. 
  • Conduct regular media trainings and coaching with WPA staff and individual clients. 
  • Manage high impact media partnerships such as pro bono video and photographic content generation and longform storytelling opportunities. 
  • Monitor, track and analyze the effectiveness of communication activities and provide data-driven strategies and tactics.
  • Manage on-site press and high-profile visits, including preparation and writing event-related remarks. 
  • Keep up to date on media, marketing, and criminal justice trends and developments, in order to address and advise the Executive Director, Board, and staff regarding changes, opportunities, and/or challenges, as well as implications of organizational policy and program decisions. 

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Proven experience creating content across multiple platforms. 
  • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with anti-racist and anti-oppressive frameworks and language. 
  • Must be able to multitask and work well under tight deadlines. 
  • Excellent communicator with strong writing and organizational skills.


The expected base salary for this position is $60K.
