The Assistant Head of School for Academics is a leadership position
reaching across all levels of the school, grades 6-12, across all curricular disciplines, and across
all programmatic offerings. The AHOSA not only provides academic leadership and oversight
to maintain the academic integrity of the school, but also mentors teachers, supports students’
academic well-being and achievement, and serves as a resource for parents. The ideal candidate
will blend deep instructional and curricular pedagogical knowledge with the ability to ensure
that best practices are implemented across all grade levels and content areas, an understanding
of, and a deep commitment to, the implementation of the vision of our founder, as well as an
understanding of culture, ethics and faith as part of pedagogy and the unique facets of teaching
and learning that have been envisioned for the school. The Tom Johnson Boys Academy is a
faith-based institution committed to nurturing the spiritual, moral, and academic growth of its
students. The Assistant Head of School is expected to actively uphold and integrate the school’s
faith-centered mission throughout the curriculum, co-curricular programs, and daily operations.
This role also requires a steadfast commitment to reinforcing the Academy’s core moral and
ethical framework, ensuring it is consistently reflected in teaching, leadership, and community
engagement. This ideal candidate will have excellent skills in communication and technology,
including outstanding writing and public speaking skills, and will possess a familiarity with the
best practices of curriculum development and an ability to instruct and coach teachers
throughout the curriculum development and vertical alignment process, as well as an
understanding that for curricula to be effective they must be routinely evaluated and periodically
revised.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Maintains alignment between the School’s mission and all
academic programming • Supervises curriculum integrity, alignment, and articulation across all
levels of the school • Serves as the academic advisor to the HOS as it pertains to curriculum,
academic programming, and personnel • Meets regularly with all faculty as a group and
individually • Supports best practices in curriculum and instructional pedagogy based on current
research related to teaching and learning • Serves as the director and coordinator of faculty
professional development and possesses the ability to coach teachers through the
implementation of these practices • Leads, develops, and manages meetings, task forces, and
other programming as they pertain to the job • Helps with development and fundraising •
Works with the Development Office on the application for and execution of all foundation
related grants • Acts as an educational catalyst for best institutional and educational practices •
Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
