Description

Boston-The Massachusetts Promise Fellow at YES will sustain and expand YES’s college prep program. The Fellow will serve 9th-12th grade students with college and career workshops, college tours and one-on-one advising. The fellow will cover topics including study skills, academic and extracurricular planning, college application, financial aid planning, and transitioning from high school to college. The role encompasses direct service, capacity building, and curriculum development

Essential Responsibilities

 Creating and implementing grade specific college prep curriculum with a focus on leadership development

 Providing one-on-one advising to high school juniors and seniors

 Maintaining program records, including attendance, scheduling and demographics

 Providing opportunities for YES offered activities for youth enrolled in the College Prep program

 Coordinating community service projects for youth enrolled in the program

 Planning college tours both locally and throughout New England

 Participating in YES’s offered outdoor sport activity

 Travel at least once/month for Fellowship meetings, retreats, and training throughout the Commonwealth

 Make a full-time, 11 month commitment


Qualifications

 Interest in and commitment to national and community service

 Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

 Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain progress on short and long-term goals

 Willingness to engage with outdoor experiential learning opportunities including rock climbing, kayaking, and skiing/snowboarding

 Driver’s license required

 BS/BA required

Experience providing or receiving college preparatory assistance, or past participation in a college prep program is preferred

 Ability to work independently and take initiative

 Excellent organizational and communication skills

 Deep belief in the power and potential of young people to create social change

 Experience working with youth  Passionate about social justice and working with diverse communities

 Must be a US Citizen, US National or Permanent Resident Alien

 Must be willing to undergo a National Service Criminal History Check, including screenings through the National Sex Offender Public Website, a name-based search of the statewide criminal history registry both in Massachusetts and your state of residence upon application to our program (if not Massachusetts), and a fingerprint based FBI check. *Eligibility to participate in MPF is contingent on the results of this screening


Fellow Schedule

Schedule includes up to 3 evenings per week, weekends and up to 3 overnight trips with youth. Schedule will vary depending on the season.

 Interviews will take place during May, 2018 and reasonable accommodations will be made available for interviews upon request.

 Selection decisions will be made on or before June 1st, 2018. All position offers will be provisional until 2018-2019 federal funding has been confirmed.

 Program start date is August 7th, 2018
