COLLEGE PROGRAM COORDINATOR

 

Bright Prospect is a year-round college access and success non-profit program in Pomona, California, that empowers high potential, low-income students to gain admission, succeed and graduate from four-year colleges and universities (some start in two-year colleges and transfer) by providing comprehensive guidance and counseling, life skills workshops and support throughout their high school and college years. Student programming begins in the summer after 9th grade year and concludes upon students’ graduation from college with a bachelor’s degree. Bright Prospect college students attend a range of college and universities, including community colleges, four-year public California universities, and selective not-for-profit colleges and universities across the country.


Bright Prospect program staff is organized into four year-specific teams: high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as a college team. The current opening is on the college team.


The College Program Coordinator (CPC) reports to the College Program Manager (CPM) and is expected to provide support to college students through to college graduation.


More specifically, the CPC is expected to:

 

LEAD

  • Foster a warm, welcoming, and positive environment for all stakeholders, including staff, students, parents, and partners
  • Report potential program issues to the College Program Manager
  • Ensure that students consistently receive the highest quality of services, that client needs are met individually and severally, and that each student makes satisfactory progress towards personal and program goals.
  • Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with school personnel, exhibiting courtesy in all transactions
  • Ensure that students successfully transition through Bright Prospect’s programming
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends in college access, college success and student development.
  • Mentor and advise college students in areas such as transitioning to college, academic planning, course and major selection, financial aid, planning for post-college, accessing resources, networking and building a support team
  • Ability to organize, manage, prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a fast- paced environment both independently and with the team
  • Plan and organize workshops in areas such as resume writing, interview skills, and other aspects of professional readiness
  • Serve students who attend a range of colleges and universities, including community colleges, four-year public California universities, and selective private colleges and universities
  • Contribute ideas to help advance the mission and the goals of the organization


FUNCTIONS

  • Represent the organization to school personnel, professional organizations, educators, funders, volunteer, the public and students
  • Provide assistance to other team members as needed, for example: high school program staff with their special activities, such as Crew Connects, Summer Academy, etc.
  • Hold each other accountable based on agreed upon program outcomes
  • Be familiar with accredited not for profit universities and colleges at the both the public and private systems, including the public California university system, as it relates to their academic programs, admission policies, standardized testing, and financial aid policies and procedures
  • Stay informed about ongoing changes in the field of college access and success and career readiness
  • Adhere to mentor/student boundaries as outlined in the Employee Handbook

 

PLAN, ORGANIZE, AND EXECUTE

  • Plan, organize, and execute program activities, including college fly-out programs, college recruiter meetings, purchase and coordination of care packages for students, coordinate with high school programming staff and college students to plan events that bring our college and high school students together, coordinate with the high school senior staff to plan transitional programming, college crew leader trainings, the pre-college retreat, and summer programming for college students
  • Prepare and deliver workshops to ensure students, families and staff are educated and current about processes, trends and opportunities available as it relates to student college access and success
  • Assist with the revision of college program curriculum annually as needed
  • Foster and manage relationships with college personnel, including college administrators, professors, and staff who provide student support services
  • Manage a college student caseload, serving as a coach to assigned college students. The coach will provide students with ongoing guidance, mentorship, and emotional support, and visit them on their college campus where possible.
  • The coach will document and manage their interaction with students, provide quantifiable data on their caseload, and keep student information on the database updated.
  • Document and keep records of interaction with college students on the database and provide information as requested to the database manager.
  • Provide student reports as requested to the development team for purposes of publicity and fundraising
  • Maintain tight budgetary controls, ensuring that program expenditures do not exceed budgeted levels
  • Coaches will be responsible for scheduling their sessions, including follow up communication to ensure student success (e.g. calls, emails, texts, campus visits, etc.)
  • Flexible and an eager team player who is excited to collaborate with colleagues, and participates in an authentic, feedback-driven office culture
  • Other duties as assigned


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution
  • Strong passion for issues of educational equity for students from underserved communities
  • Deep understanding of the challenges faced by first generation students and underrepresented communities. Experience working directly with these student groups is strongly desired.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in the field of college retention and success
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to take initiative, capacity to work independently as part of an intra- and inter-organizational team and multi-tasking proficiency
  • Excellent demonstrated skills in writing, communication, presentation, time and project management
  • Ability to organize, manage, prioritize and complete multiple tasks in fast-paced environment while working independently or in a team setting
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Bright Prospect mission, including educational equality, college success, and professional readiness
  • Experience working with a diverse group of college students and ability to support students and hold them accountable as appropriate
  • Strong relationship-building and group facilitation capabilities, incorporating cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular hours to meet students’ needs (some weekend work is necessary and required)
  • Proficiency with word processing, database and presentation software and social media
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required and access to reliable transportation; periodic regional travel required
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) and drug screen.
  • Must present proof of being free of activate Tuberculosis (TB) prior to beginning employment. All TB clearances must be conducted no more than 60 days prior to start of employment.

 

 COMPENSATION

Annual salary range: ($41,600-43,000) based on experience.
