Job Announcement

Position: Development Associate

Organization: GRIP Training Institute

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (Fremont office)

The GRIP Training Institute (www.insight-out.org) is seeking our first Development Associate to join our growing team. We are looking for a self-starting, detail-oriented, passionate individual to help shape and grow our fundraising infrastructure and scale our relationship efforts so we can change more lives and influence the justice system.

Our flagship program, GRIP (Guiding Rage Into Power), is a one-year, intensive program that guides incarcerated people through a journey of deep transformation and accountability. GRIP is a proven model for rehabilitation and healing for incarcerated people, developed over 24 years in the California State prisons by Jacques Verduin, in collaboration with thousands of life-sentenced (with parole) people.

We are at an exciting stage in our growth, looking to expand to ensure all Lifers in CA have access to the transformative power of GRIP, because we know the program works: in the last 8 years, 913 students have graduated from GRIP, and 321 have been released/paroled. Only one has ever returned to prison. That is a 99.7% success rate. Please explore our website, insight-out.org, to learn more.

If you have a passion for justice, a deep commitment to personal and social transformation, and experience in fund- (or business) development come join our dynamic, growing team!

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development Associate will work closely with both the Founding Director and the Executive Director in three primary areas:

Support and Grow our Individual and Major Donor Program

Sustain and Grow a Larger Foundation and Government Grants Program

Build Fund Development Systems and Infrastructure

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • You love raising money and have experience in a non-profit (or business development) setting already. This role includes strengthening and growing a fund development program from one that is largely informal and held by the Founder to one that has a solid infrastructure enabling the organization to quickly grow and scale.
  • You can work with a large range of different people. You can comfortably collaborate with people from all walks of life, including high net-worth individuals, formerly incarcerated people, government officials, and a diverse team of volunteer facilitators.
  • You know how to create/manage projects, systems, processes and tools. In this role, you will be developing infrastructure and processes for our fund development program, including a funder database and tracking/management tools. We are run as a distributed organization, and wish to improve on our web based infrastructure. Your familiarity with data and modern communication technologies and funder databases will be important.
  • You can self-manage and be flexible where you work, in the CA Bay Area. The office is in Fremont, CA and our Founding Director, who is our lead fundraiser, is in Woodacre, CA. This job can be done partially at home. Expectation: 2 days/week physically at the Fremont office, and probably one face-to-face meeting in Woodacre each week.
  • You will resonate deeply with the work we do. Our organization is about transforming lives and you will likely have a sense of introspection and practices of self-reflection, or at least an interest in it! We work hard to live what we teach, and are looking for someone who can engage as a part of our team.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years fundraising experience in a non-profit organization (or relevant business development experience in a for-profit setting).
  • Strong writing skills -- including ability to put together material into clear and compelling stories and make a case for funding our work; ability to compose and edit a range of documents using correct grammar and spelling.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Able to take initiative, work independently with little direct supervision; and to be flexible within a fluid and growing organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working collaboratively on diverse teams.
  • Desire to grow and develop in the position, and increase responsibilities.
  • Must be able to be cleared to enter prisons (CDCR runs a complete background check).
  • Must be able to easily travel to different meetings and offices in the Bay Area. Valid driver's License and access to a car preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
