The Communications Division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society, while maintaining our place as one of the world’s most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. The Division’s creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, marketing, creative and impact media for the National Geographic Society and amplify this content on our own channels, across NGP and through outside partners and earned media. The Division is composed of six integrated teams: Brand, Communications, Creative, Impact Media, Content Integration and Marketing.


Reporting to the Sr. Director, Executive Communications, the Executive Communications Specialist will fill a critical role within the Communications team. This position is responsible for supporting the Sr. Director in executing the communications strategy for the office of the CEO and the Executive team.


This role will assist with executive communication needs such as the development of briefs, talking points, remarks, letters, statements, social media copy, content creation and other communications as needed. The Coordinator will also help with research, building out presentations and other activities in support of the Senior Director and Communications department.Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

  • Assist in the development of briefs, talking points, speeches, thought leadership pieces, presentation materials, background research, monthly and quarterly reports and other communications, as needed, to support National Geographic Society executives. Aid in the review of outbound communications to ensure factual accuracy, brand messaging, and alignment with executive “voice.” (40%)
  • Assist the Sr. Director with social media strategy for the CEO, including editorial and calendar planning, social media copy and content creation, social media engagement, monitoring and reporting. (30%)
  • Collaborate with and support the Senior Director and Communications team on the implementation of proactive earned media strategies that elevate National Geographic executives and other mission-based projects. This includes the development of prep materials, such as briefing documents and talking points, as well as assisting with prep or trainings for executives. (15%)
  • Work closely with the Senior Director to secure speaking engagements for the CEO at desired conferences and events, coordinate logistics, and provide on-the-ground support, where needed. Assist with managing and vetting executive speaking requests.  (15%)

What You’ll Bring

Education Background

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related fields.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience   

3 to 5 years of experience in communications or public relations.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • A strong communicator and collaborator
  • Excellent writing skills and sharp editorial judgement
  • Creative writer and brand storyteller
  • Experience developing and executing communications plans
  • Understanding of earned media
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with content for social and digital platforms
  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook
